Movie Review: PUCCINI now until later

This is an entertaining biography of the Italian libertine who gave us the great operas LA BOHEME, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, TOSCA and TURANDOT. Gabriele Ferzetti is competent as Giacomo Ferzetti. The stunning Swede M?rta Tor?n, who left the USA after tiring of being type cast as a woman of mystery, plays the long-suffering wife of the composer and actually ages in this movie. (In real life, she died suddenly at age 31.) Nadia Gray portrays one of Puccini's lovers. The voices of Beniamino Gigli and other noted Italian opera singers of the era are heard throughout. Till a studio decides to produce a film with more depth and scope on this great Italian composer, like Columbia's SONG WITHOUT END on Franz Liszt, this French-Italian production will have to do.
Summary of Puccini
Produced in Italy in breathtaking Technicolor, this biographical story of Puccini (played by L'avventura's Gabriele Ferzetti) spans his creative life from early student days to the height of success, including his early flop Madama Butterfly and his incomplete Turandot. Along the way he encounters three women who change his life, including a sexy, beautiful singer (Two for the Road's Nadia Gray) whom he drops for a small town girl (Sirocco's Marta Toren), and a servant girl who commits suicide over him. Well-selected excerpts from Manon, La Boheme, Madama Butterfly and Turandot are featured along with other Puccini music, including the voice of Beniamino Gigli.
