Movie Reviews of PsychoMovie Review: Unlike most, I felt it was a worthy remake... Summary: 4 Stars
A lot of people and critics have criticized Gus Van Sant's remake of the beloved and legendary `Psycho' simply because it didn't change much of anything except the color on the screen. For that I think it should be praised, but that's just my opinion. First of all, I want to say that I don't understand all the bad remarks about Vince Vaughn's Norman, I feel he was brilliant, creepy but not too creepy. If you recall, it wasn't always how he acted but the things he said that made Perkins character crawl under your skin, the almost boyish way he interacted with Marion and the way his words could shift from carefree to agitated almost instantly, and Vaughn, I felt, did that very same thing. It was Anne Heche as Marion Crane that didn't sit right with me, she was almost too cold, unlike Janet Leigh who came across compassionate and almost motherly (which may be why Norman was drawn to her the way that he was). As many have pointed out the supporting roles played by Mortensen and Moore and especially Macy were brilliant, and I was so happy to see Philip Baker Hall pop up in a small role as the local sheriff. Yes, this film is pretty much shot for shot the original, but to me it's a great thing, paying tribute to a classic film by reenacting, not reinventing.
Movie Review: It's better than you would think! Summary: 4 Stars
This film is well worth a watch even if you don't see the point in remaking classic films. Van Sant stated that his intention was to make a colour version of the film for modern day audiences who might not be familiar with the original, and also to see whether remaking a film shot for shot would give the same result. The planning is meticulous, and the attention to detail in all departments exemplary. Danny Elfman's revision of the original's Bernard Hermann score is particularly impressive. Anne Heche and Vince Vaughan lack something that Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins had, but Van Sant works wonders within the tight constraints he has set himself. The end result is a pretty good film, which I suspect, if the Hitchcock version had never been made, would have been much better received. The DVD commentary from the director and his two lead actors is interesting, but Heche has little of interest to add after she has left the screen. The other extras make this a worthwhile purchase.
Movie Review: Don't shower alone! Summary: 4 Stars
Well done Gus Van Sant. You have made "Psycho" how Hitchcock would have wanted it to be....in color, in stereo, a bit sexier and with more gore! Come on guys, give Van Sant a break. This film is supposed to be a tribute to Hitchcock. The DVD version is mind-blowing. The creepy theme tune (which has haunted me from childhood) is amazing in digital surround sound, the visuals (now in color) pack a bigger punch (especially the shower scene) and the extra features (Psycho Path doco, screen savers and menu page) are fabulous! My only criticism is why change Norman's house and the shower curtain? The original house was very creepy looking (the new one looks like the Chicken Ranch from "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" and the shower curtain is far too trendy for a run-down motel!) Apart from those little faux pas, I loved the new "Psycho". Well done Van Sant, Heche and Vaughn. It reminded me of how scarey it is to shower alone!
Movie Review: respect the artist, if not the movie Summary: 4 Stars
to all of those who say that gus van sant's opus is "unoriginal", you're missing the entire point. if you were to follow his career from his early work, you would realize that he's more of an avante gard artist than anything else. willing to try new things and experiment, re-making "psycho" was merely another way for him to tread upon undiscovered ground. although, the film is far from brilliant, one must admit that he tried something that has never been tried before. van sant is not a hollywood director and his unexpected success with "good will hunting" gave him the opportunity to take advantage of his newly-gained popularity within tinsel town. "psycho" was nothing more than a fleeting thought that raced through his head when he was finally offered an abnormally bigger budget. i'm willing to bet that, if given the opportunity over again, he wouldn't have done it any differently.
Movie Review: BARELY.BARELY 4 STARS....... Summary: 4 Stars
This has got to be the first movie in history that i marginally liked but bought anyways. it barely made a 4 star rating with me. I guess the reason i kind of liked it is because of the way it was filmed and the style gus van zant used. I enjoyed his use of colour and the costumes as well were borderline avant garde. This movie is in no way a "shot for shot remake" by the way! That would be literally impossible to do on film! Wake up cinema buffs! Psycho 1998 is no classic, Vince Vaughn's performance was at most, juvenile and restrained. As if he was embarrassed to really let loose the character. Anne Heech did a mousy job of playing her character but did add a lot of nineties trend and style to the film, which is a good thing! Overall the movie sucked but the style rocked. Worth owning for that only, in my oppinion.
