Movie Reviews of Prospero's Books

Movie Review: unconscious artifact
Summary: 5 Stars

this movie makes me feel as if i've been swallowed whole by deja vu, long-forgotten dreams and any other unconscious artifact. brilliant!

Movie Review: Concerning the Allied Artists DVD release
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered a copy of this on DVD last week and just finished watching it. It is a DVD but it is a decent quality copy from the video master. It is in SORE need of digital restoration from the negative, the colors are no where near what they were in the theater, but the quality is much better than VHS. If you are wanting a copy of this film, snatch one up where ever you can find it. Like most fans, I have been waiting a very long time for a copy of this, even though it is not perfect, it is a copy and still joyful to watch.

The fact that this is not a Criterion release complete with an outstanding array of special feature goodies is a total crime against the art of cinema.

Movie Review: A Brilliant Interpretation of "The Tempest"
Summary: 4 Stars

I will not comment on the technical merits of the DVD pressing as other reviewers have done.
As a piece of art, this movie is truly outstanding. The Tempest is one of Shakespeare's lsat plays, and its themes are love, compassion, the quest for knowledge & power, and finally subduing the ego and finding peace. Greenaway's version is "arty", maybe, but it is gorgeous, well-written, intellectually intriguing, and unique. Gielgud narrates and he is incomparable. Watch it!

Movie Review: Amazing film, horrible transfer
Summary: 3 Stars

This is my favorite film and has been since it was first released. I bought the VHS (also for an insane amount) and was excited that it was finally available on DVD, but this transfer is really bad. The audio overloads at times, and the video quality is poor. the video isn't even full frame 4:3. I agree with those who said that this looks like a cheap VHS->DVD transfer. To pay $70+ for it is almost an insult. Unless you are a true hardcore fan of this film, avoid this DVD.

Movie Review: A superb cinematographic event, but there's also dialogue!
Summary: 3 Stars

Prospero' s books represented a regrettable achievement, because all of us are aware about the daring artistic proposal of Peter Greenaway, but in this opportunity, the visual grandiloquence surpassed by far, the dialogue. On the other hand, the superb cast remained less that relegated, being Gielguld the narrator who supported the drama.
