Movie Reviews of Prom Night (Widescreen)Movie Review: Can actually see the movie this time... Summary: 4 Stars
Finally, a cleaned-up, widescreen Prom Night. The previous DVD version was appalling. A full screen mess with such poor picture quality that you genuinely can't tell what's happening in some of those very dark sequences. Granted...they were dark, and the film was low budget, but that version was frustrating...you couldn't see any action, so you have no hope of getting scared or grossed out.
Not that the film will do a lot of either. This is a pretty standard slasher of the era starring the Queen--Jamie Lee Curtis. This time, someone is stalking high school seniors with menacing phone calls. Seems an old accident is coming back to haunt these very old looking teenagers. Before long, there will be some slicing and dicing as an axe-wielding loon chases people around in the dark, etc, etc. At least one quality beheading, and a cheese-laden, time-capsule disco prom in all its glory.
For fans who've waited for a decent release, this version is widescreen but still has no extras. Recommended for fans of movies where people making menacing phone calls in that voice...
Movie Review: 80's Horror Nostalgia Summary: 4 Stars
This is literally the first slasher movie I remember watching when I was a kid. Since I was a horror movie virgin, I had no idea who the killer was until the very end. Nowadays, more sophisticated audiences will be able to guess the ending in the first 10 minutes. But aside from that, Prom Night is still one of the better slasher flicks from the late 70's/early 80's era and holds up surprisingly well almost 30 years later. The director manages to create quite a suspenseful mood throughout the film, especially during the chase scenes. The movie is helped by a very creepy score (not to be confused with the disco music). Leslie Neilson is wasted (what was his purpose?), but Jamie Lee Curtis earns her title of Scream Queen.
Movie Review: Prom Night Summary: 4 Stars
One day in 1974 a group of kids decide to play a little game and it goes too far... One ends up dead. Afterwards they make a pact. Six years later someone is out to get them and wants revenge.. Soon after they are being stalked by a masked man. He ends up trying to get them all back on Prom Night.
Cheesy Disco Music, predictable plot, campy... but as a whole it wasnt bad. I had an idea of who the killer was and I was right. I also could guess what took place before the ending down to a t. but the rest of the film makes up for it. For the genre I would rate this one somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. It's a decent low budget horror film.
Movie Review: Loved it! Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a late bloomer on this one. I never saw it until tonight - don't know how that happened. I love the horror/slasher movies from the late 70's mid-80's. This killed me! Halloween meets Carrie meets Saturday Night Fever. An escaped luntic, the police chase, disco-disco (good music BTW) and a prom with two conniving students all add up to a lot of fun. Not great, not overly scary, but a real hoot!
Movie Review: "Great Horror Film!" Summary: 4 Stars
Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen star in this 1980 horror film.
A killer seeks revenge on the ones responsible for a girl's death.
This is a great film and I'm glad to have it on dvd. It has good
picture and sound, but no extras. I highly recommend this.
