Movie Review: Prom Night...Everything Is All Right
Summary: 4 Stars

Universal's PROM NIGHT is an awesome horror movie about a young man preying on 3 immature teenagers who unintentionally killed his kid sister years ago while ganging up on her at a vacant building, yet these unconscientious self-centered teens are quite unaware that the killer is on a killing spree and actually stalking them and means serious business, which they don't realize until it's too late while they're being killed off by the madman one by one at the prom, which of course happens after the girls get drunk, laid, and stoned along with their prom dates just like a typical high school prom, not to mention that the teenagers who get drunk, stoned, and/or have premarital sex always seem to end up dying off in these kind of horror flicks almost as if the producers and directors are trying to tell us not to have premarital sex or get drunk or loaded, but I find it kind of odd why Kim's boyfriend Nick is the only guy from the group of people responsible for Alex's kid sister's death that survived, even though Nick was nearly killed at the end till Kim(Jamie-Lee Curtis)saves Nick's life, but it seems like Nick should've died off too like Jude, Kelley, and Wendy did since Nick was just as equally guilty as the others, yet the police and the principals at the High School don't realize that they're barking up the wrong tree by jumping to the conclusion that the maniac who is zeroing in on the kids who are responsible for the little girls death is the result of an escaped mental patient and then an eccentric janitor from the high school.

PROM NIGHT also seemed like a horror flick between the movies HALLOWEEN and CARRIE between life in the 1970's such as teens who are into sex, drugs, Rock & Roll, typical high school peer pressures, teens wanting and going to prom, teenagers screwing around and being killed off by a madman one by one, etc.

Fortunately the astonishing foxy Jamie-Lee Curtis from John Carpenters HALLOWEEN and THE FOG also co-stars in PROM NIGHT too, which adds more interest and drama to this movie, especially since Jamie-Lee Curtis always seemed to have an uncanny knack for terror movies.

It's just too bad that PROM NIGHT 2 and above nor the remade 2008 PROM NIGHT flick weren't nearly as good as this movie was since this was the original PROM NIGHT and the PROM NIGHT flick that started it all.

Movie Review: It's "Prom Night" and everything is all right!!
Summary: 4 Stars

1980's "Prom Night" is a fun combination of a disco era psycho-slasher with it's own powerhouse disco anthem theme song, that goes- "It's Prom Night, and everything is all right!" Featuring John Carpenter's "Halloween" Scream Queen, Jamie Lee Curtis as Kim Hammond, sister to an ill-fated kid sister who suffers a tragic childhood death! It's after six long years that Hamilton High School seniors Kelly (Mary Beth Rubens), Jude (Joy Thompson), Wendy (Anne-Marie Martin), and Nick (Casey Stevens) have been hiding the truth of what really happened to ten-year-old Robin Hammond the day her broken body was discovered near an old abandoned convent. The foursome kept secret how they taunted Robin - backing her into a corner until, frightened, she stood on a window ledge... and fell to her death. Though an accident, the then-twelve-year-olds feared they'd be held responsible and vowed never to tell. But someone else was there that day... watching. And now, that someone is ready to take murderous revenge on Prom Night!

I've always enjoyed this "totally `80's" slasher flick, especially with it's star, Jamie Lee Curtis fresh from her "Halloween" role that crowned her the ultimate Scream Queen! The movie carries a reminisce of "Halloween" as each of the Hamilton High School teen's are killed off one by one. This movie was also fun due to the "disco era" which makes one scene in particular very enjoyable, as "bad girl" Wendy is chased through the hallways of the school by the killer, as the pulse pounding beat of the disco beat echoes through the halls along with Wendy's screams! Cool! The new Echo Bridge Home Entertainment dvd is a MUCH superior transfer and audio upgrade from the previously inferior Platinum Disc release. I highly recommend this version of "Prom Night" to fans of "Halloween," "Terror Train," and slasher flicks in general. And even disco fans will celebrate the Prom Night fever as Jamie Lee struts her stuff to the spin of the disco ball! "It's Prom Night and everything is all right!"

Movie Review: "It's not who you go with, it's who takes you home."

For a few years, it was hard to obtain a decent DVD copy of this film. The Anchor Bay version had been long out of print and could only be obtained from private sellers at a ridiculous price. I never saw the 1998 Anchor Bay version but heard it was a nice release. The 2004 edition from Alliance Atlantis (or Echo Bridge Home Entertainment) where the cover art displays a knife blade with Jaime Lee Curtis' face reflected was a dispicable release in every way. It was like watching a used VHS copy with terrible picture and sound quality and that is not why DVD's evolved. The companies releasing these films should have to pass some sort of inspection for DVD transfers. At last, Echo Bridge released a new version of Prom Night in 2007 with fancier cover art (Jaime Lee Curtis standing in the school hallway with her prom dress and tiara on holding a bouquet of flowers with a bloody ax in them). I was very impressed with the effort that went into this as it was well done. Great picture quality (the scenes that were too dark to see what was going on before are now visible). Also included was a nice chapter menu and more chapter stops (the previous release only had 5 chapter stops and a bad looking menu). If you are a fan of eighties slashers, this version needs to be in your collection beside Terror Train and Halloween. A nice chase scene with Eddie Benton in this film is also worth savoring. What to recommend is the Australian thriller Road Games featuring Jaime Lee Curtis that many people may have missed. For the genre, I give Prom Night 4 stars. I really liked this one. There was something about the Canadian horror films that made them stand out (Black Christmas and Happy Birthday to Me were some others). Another Canadian horror gem I'm still waiting patiently for is Curtains which has unfortunately not seen the light of day on DVD yet.

Movie Review: "Now It's Time To Fade To Black"
Summary: 4 Stars

Their identity hidden by a ski mask, someone is slashing the student body on Hamilton High's prom night. What dark secret links the victims? What terrible pain has the mysterious stranger suffered in the past that compels him to kill and kill again? Terrifying elements of "Halloween" and "Carrie" have been blended together to create a great gem from the slasher frenzy era.

Jamie Lee Curtis does a terrific job playing Kim Hammond, disco queen and sister of ten-year-old Robin who was found dead at an abandoned school six years ago. In fact, of all the slasher movies she starred in, this is one of my favorites. Why? The decapitation that evacuates the gym is awesome. Also, the fact that the killer's identity isn't revealed until the end gave it a mysterious feel that reminded me of an Italian giallo. I also love the "Fade to Black" song sung by Gordene Simpson during the closing credits; it accurately describes the pent up rage that led the killer to his emotional unhinging. In fact, the movie has a great musical score, which was provided by Paul Zaza.

Though "Prom Night" is enjoyable, the DVD from Echo Bridge doesn't receive many accolades. The video is grainy, the audio is weak, and there is the absence of extras, not even a trailer. It was cheaper for me to buy it at Best Buy than trying to purchase an out of print version from Anchor Bay, which was probably a better product all around. At least Anchor Bay's DVD had a trailer.

Let me also say that this "Prom Night" is so much better than the predictable "Prom Night" remake of 2008. The remake was void of any plot twists and turns and the viewer knows who the killer is from the very beginning.

Movie Review: It's Not Who You Go With Honey, It's Who Takes You Home!
Summary: 4 Stars

"Prom Night" is an effective little whodunit that centers around a mysterious killer stalking four high school students during their senior prom as retribution for their part in the death of a young girl six years earlier. Not on the hit list but caught up in all of the murder and mayhem is "Scream Queen" Jamie Lee Curtis as prom queen Kim Hammond. She's every young man's dream date: smart, sexy and tough.

Leslie Nielsen is fun in a glorified cameo (although he received top billing) as Curtis's father, principal of the high school which provides much of the film's setting.

The supporting cast, which I suspect is made up primarily of Canadians (since the flick was filmed in Toronto), is excellent, especially the gorgeous Eddie Benton (now Anne-Marie Martin, or should I say...Mrs. Michael Crichton) as sexy bad girl Wendy.

The film boasts an excellent disco score by Paul Zaza and Carl Zittrer, and an eerie opening flashback sequence involving all of the main characters as children.

What separates "Prom Night" from the countless clones of slasher greats "Psycho" and "Halloween" is that you will find yourself actually caring about the characters.
