Movie Review: An Absolute Waste

I have seen this danced by the Royal Ballet in the 1960s and by the Kirov in 1996. This is a travesty. Snippets of the music... not the full score with scene fillers by some other modernist. This to me was a porn version - shortened at 85 minutes - the full score runs more than 140 and even the traditional La Scala version is 115.
I was a fool not to read the reviews fully here before I purchased. I since have bought the LaScala version which is fine. The first customer review about says it all - don 't pay any attention to the official Amazon one.
Everyu thing here is trashed...music dancing and story.

Angelin Preljocaj's startling new choreography of Shakespeare's tragic star-crossed lovers, set to Sergei Prokofiev's powerful score, is performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet, widely acclaimed for their stylish and innovative productions. Preljocaj sees the story as a class struggle between Romeo and Juliet with love as the power that can overthrow the established order's oppression. Reflecting the director's vision, designer Enki Bilal has magnificently created a stage world reflecting a communist sterility. The contrast between the ballet's cold environment and the lovers' heated encounters is beautifully realized in supple and imaginative duets danced by Pascale Doye and Nicolas Dufloux.This 1992 Opera de Lyon production of Sergei Prokofiev's masterly dance adaptation of Shakespeare's immortal tragedy about two "star-cross'd lovers" will shock anyone who expects a conventional treatment of one of ballet's most durable classics. Avant-garde choreographer Angelin Preljocaj sets the work not in Verona, Italy, but in an unnamed, vaguely familiar totalitarian state--the stage is taken up by mostly sterile, gray prison walls. Preljocaj's choreography is innovative, his dancers, especially the leads, Pascale Doye (Juliette) and Nicholas Dufloux (Romeo), are flawless, and Kent Nagano leads the Orchestre de l'Opera de Lyon in a shimmering account of excerpts from Prokofiev's score. That's a warning: at 85 minutes, this production barely covers half of Prokofiev's music, showing off Preljocaj's genius at the expense of the composer. It's worth a look if you're on the prowl for something different, but what's onstage is defiantly not Prokofiev's ballet. --Kevin Filipski
