Movie Reviews of Prince of DarknessMovie Review: Long on Atmosphere Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this for the first time on TV in the early days of the Sci-Fi Channel, and my esteem for this film has grown over the years - its a fun horror movie, but at the same time its very well put together. In Prince of Darkness, John Carpenter ably combines familiar locales, deep-seated phobias, an ancient evil menace, and the standard ten-little-Indians format to great effect. When certain signs indicate that some evil is awakening in the cellar of an ancient church in a California city, a local priest calls on a prominent local physicist and his graduate students to investigate. But what happens when the evil begins to reach out, and the evil's minions start attacking? Definitely gruesome, definitely high-concept, definitely fun.
Movie Review: Another great one from Carpentar... Summary: 5 Stars
Prince of Darkness is a movie where religion and science comes together. Before you say: "it has zombies in it so it must be cheesy," watch the movie and you'll see how surprised you'll be. A group of students, a preacher, and a teacher go into an abandoned church to study a container of liquid which is supposed to be Satan and at some point, Satan begans to control the environment around the church. What I liked is how this movie tried to explain what Satan is using science. Watch for Alice Cooper playing one of the homeless people. There's a love story, but at least it's not unrealistic or sappy like most love stories are.
Movie Review: One Scary Movie Summary: 5 Stars
... It really is a creepy movie (the effects, score, etc., are great), even though it's considered a "B" movie. Put the lights down low, crank up the volume, and witness for yourself Carpenter's beautiful Panavision widescreen shots (on DVD) and great/creepy score. The ending really is disturbing. I may be in the minority, but I think besides "The Thing", this is John's next scariest/creepiest movie. Also not to miss by John Carpenter, The Fog (horror), and Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from L.A. (both campy spoofs) which are hilarious.
Movie Review: Discover a lost masterpiece! Summary: 5 Stars
In a lifetime of watching horror movies, only two films have given me nightmares - Hitchcock's PSYCHO, and Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS. Now I saw Psycho at the tender age of four (Mom, what were you thinking???,) but Prince of Darkness gave me the willies as an adult. The combination of hard science vs. religious dogma really connected with me, and I find myself thinking about the themes of this film frequently, even though I saw it for the first time over twenty years ago. Highly recommended. This is my favorite Carpenter film after THE THING.
Movie Review: Required for the true horror collection... Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great movie. There's a blend of sci-fi and horror - old fashioned horror from the 80s. This is a smart movie, a creepy movie, and a horror movie all rolled into one. You will apreciate the brilliance of John Carpenter after this. It has a slow steady pace that digs deep into your fears and eventually you will be dreaming about the movie and waking up scared to go back to sleep. Classic....must have for the collection. Watch it every 2 or 3 months or so...
