Movie Reviews of Prime Suspect 2

Movie Review: New DVD got rid of overdubbing and disk-flipping
Summary: 5 Stars

I concur with other reviewers' high opinions of the artistic quality of this DVD, except for a minor quibble: I can't buy the biracial affair with a Detective Sergeant. (And in a later Episode, Mirren's character gets pregnant, likewise in a work-related situation, by a married consultant, father of four kids, who lives 6000 miles away.)

Jane Tennison is a hard-nosed and coolly logical Detective Chief Inspector who knows that the good ole boys, including a few big shots, are lurking in wait for an uppity woman like her to slip up. How many Caucasian female Lieutenant Colonels in our armed forces get mixed up with African Sergeants or married fathers, especially if they work or consult with the men regularly? (How many would keep their jobs if they did?) However Jane's passions might burn and seethe beneath that calm exterior, she would be unlikely to slake them at work, especially with these guys, and most especially without tending to birth control. She's savvy enough to graze more cautiously on some of the many safer possibilities in London. However, this is not worth deducting a star. Besides, as one writer got rich pointing out, smart women do sometimes make foolish choices. A few smart women might even cite me as proof of this.

I am happy to report that the new DVD version has the naughty words intact and does not need to be flipped. The audio and especially the video are still below the quality one should expect for something produced so recently, although not too distractingly so. Some stuff from the 70's is technologically better, though.

This is a great detective series with a unique point of view, generally quite believable except for the odd minor quibble as set out above. I have bought all available episodes. It does owe a bit to Morse (what a marriage that would have made!), but who cares? Miss Marple might not approve, but the jungle where Mirren's tigress prowls is hardly St. Mary Mead.

Movie Review: Prime Suspect 2 - It only gets better with age
Summary: 5 Stars

The second installment of DCI Jane Tennison finds a story that pursues both the politics and the reality of race relations in Britain. Still battling the "old-boy" network, she is assigned a case that has both political and racial overtones, one that many would be happy if she failed to resolve. As usual, the messy overtones of her personal like intrude into the story.
Following on the success of the first Prime Suspect, this would be just another sequel if it weren't for the compelling story and the performance of Helen Mirren. Driven to succeed against both forces outside and inside the department, she looks for the unpleasant truth against those who would use this tragedy for their own purposes.
Another "must see" this second installment cemented the series as great viewing.

Movie Review: Savor the best police drama ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

Be prepared to love Jane Tennyson, a British police detective who is as competent and talented as the actress playing her, Helen Mirren. The story is well crafted and builds suspense while weaving a complex psychological portrait of a driven passionate women who beyond anything wants to capture the criminal. Tennyson in the tradition of the talented detective does not always follow the rules but with a combination of intuition and dogged persistence brings the criminal to justice. In addition to the complex relationships she has as a woman in a primariy male environment, she also has an inter-racial relationship. If you havent seen the first one yet, go back and watch it as well.

Movie Review: VERY COMPELLING SERIES
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought my wife both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Prime Suspect series for Christmas. I had watched them at the time they were originally broadcast. Yet I was surprised at the excellance shown throughout each episode. As usual, the main character is a very complicated person. But this series adds an interesting element by introducing a Black officer into an all White unit, where he is definitly unwelcome. The parallel challanges to the main character and her new officer are very well done.
There is an interesting "did he do it or didn't he do it" element that has a novel twist at the end. I bet you can guess what I'm going to buy my wife for her birthday in March.

Movie Review: No Sophomore Slump Here!
Summary: 5 Stars

Prime Suspect 2 is just as well made and compelling as its predecessor. This story was especially interesting because of the race relations angle that was a focus of much of the program. Helen Mirren's Jane is not always a likable character but she seems very very real and the series really showcases what a fine actress Mirren is.
