Movie Reviews of Pride and PrejudiceMovie Review: Great movie! Summary: 5 Stars
I've only seen this version on TV so can't yet say anything about the DVD quality. Many people think the later and newer versions are better. I disagree. There is something about the classic that makes the movie better. And who better than Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson to star!
I look forward to many viewings of this movie!
Update 7/6/08
My mother & I watched this version over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it! It is different from the PBS version she has seen but she very much enjoyed the movie! Considering that this came out in 1940, they did an amazing job with the scenery, character casting, and sets. It even looked great on my so-so television set.
Movie Review: Strays a bit from the book but still a favorite! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first film version I had ever seen of Pride and Prejudice and I was so glad to finally see it on DVD. An Austen fanatic, I own more than one version and while this one takes a few more librties than others, it is my favorite. Like most movies it sticks true to the main points of the book but, even the differences seem to fit in seemlessly. If you are a stickler for the movie being a carbon copy of the book (in which case you might want to try the BBC version) then you probably won't enjoy it as much. However, if you are just in the mood for sassy, speak-your-mind Ms. Bennett and holier-than-thou Mr. Darcy, I think you will enjoy it just as much as I do!
Movie Review: Pride and Prejudice Summary: 5 Stars
Penned by Aldous Huxley, this splendid adaptation of Jane Austen's satirical novel seamlessly translates her barbed criticisms of upper-class mores to the big screen. Under MGM journeyman Leonard's guiding hand, Olivier and Garson are a joy to watch as romantic interests whose strained rapport matures from mutual disdain to honest affection. Karl Freund's magnificent cinematography captures all the period details--like a lawn-party archery lesson--beautifully, while Aldous Huxley's witty dialogue preserves the spirited flavor of Austen's text. And I do mean to "Prejudice" you: Avoid the botched 2005 version!
Movie Review: A treasure Summary: 5 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this version and I'm so glad I finally saw it. Though the Colin Firth 5-hour version will always be my favorite, this rendition is witty and entertaining. I didn't mind the diversions from the book, as they were fun and didn't change the meaning of the story. This is one older movie that holds up well, and Laurence Olivier was a very handsome man. It was an adjustment to picture Greer Garson in the role but as the movie progressed she grew on me. I'm going to buy this for my mother, who's in her 70s. She loves the A&E version and I think she'll like this too.
Movie Review: A twist to a classic Summary: 5 Stars
I'm sure there are fans that would be very unhappy with the turn out and the strengths of the characters, but I have to highlight the differences. This is a movie and in picture land stories are manipulated to fit the audience's needs. Including the big costumes and dramatic expressions that the actors wear. I was very happy with the way the story was interpreted. Laurence Olivier is very talented too. If you're an individual that demands to see Pride and Prejudice as how Jane Austen wrote it, try the Pride and Prejudice 1995 TV mini-series by BBC.
