Movie Reviews of Pride and Prejudice

Movie Review: Pride and Prejudice 1940 version
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this movie as a gift and watched it tonight. I had seen it years ago on TV and enjoyed it so much I wanted my own copy. This is not the movie for all Pride and Prejudice fans; however, it has some excellent points. The most important point being the acting. In my humble opinion out of all the versions this is the best overall performance. This movie has the only Mrs. Bennet I can tolerate. ;)

The story is kept to the two main characters. I feel this movie shows the honest emotions of those individual characters. As for the missing dialog you can add it yourself if you have read the book. If you have not read the book just put your feet up and enjoy a delightful story.

My next favorite movie is the A&E 1996 version. No laughing in that movie and I do wish they had put a cork in some of those silly girls mouths. Such annoying giggling. My least favorite movie is the 2005 version. Many people believe it is a wonderful movie, but in my opinion it is the one that wanders the furthest from the book. The characters come across as very weak individuals.

There have been critical remarks made about the clothes not being period pieces. If you watch other old movies you will note that Hollywood always managed to bring in the fashions of the day. I often wonder if they were hoping to market the styles.

Please put some of your expectations aside, remember this movie was made over 60 years ago, during war time, and enjoy a simply wonderful show.

Movie Review: Not an authentic version of Jane Austen's story, but a wonderful movie on its own
Summary: 5 Stars

Those who know and love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and don't want the classic story to be messed with, may not like this version of the story, but I loved it!

The framework of the story is true to the original - a family with 5 unmarried daughters is hoping to marry all of them off in "good matches." Each character is unique - Elizabeth is witty and intelligent, Jane is beautiful and loving, Mr. Bennett is tolerant and caring, Mrs. Bennett is shallow and juvenile, Mr. Bingley is impressionable and handsome, Mr. Darcy is elegant and strong. The basic plot elements are true to the book.

The timing of the movie differs from the original story (as seen through the clothing, buildings, manners, recreation, and architecture). P&P addicts all have favorite Elizabeths and Greer Garson certainly plays the role differently than the others - but she is endearing and witty. And I don't think there has ever been a Mr. Darcy I didn't fall in love with and Laurence Olivier is a wonderful Mr. Darcy ... regal and aloof but also charming and caring.

If you are looking for an accurate retelling of the story, this is not it. But if you want a pleasant escape with wit and romance then this is it!

Movie Review: One of the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best versions of P & P, imho. I'm not a stickler for details as some folks are, so my only criticism is that Greer Garson, a fine actress, nevertheless is a bit too old for the part of a 21-year old Lizzy. But if you can overlook that, this is a thoroughly enjoyable adaptation of J.A.'s marvelous book. I have it on video, and have waited for it to come out on DVD, which it has, WITH optional English sub-titles available, which I need. I HATE to miss any of the dialogue! My favorite scenes are when Lady Catherine, the aristocrat, who thoroughly disapproves of Lizzy for lack of social station & wealth, visits Lizzy to very firmly forbid her to marry her nephew Darcy. (Edna Mae Oliver is great in this role.) Then she goes back to Darcy & tells him that Lizzy got her back up and refused to refuse to marry him. His facial expression at that point is priceless. The other versions of the movie do not include this. He dashes back to Lizzy, & you can guess the rest.

You won't go wrong by ordering this DVD!! It will be my 3rd version of P & P. Each one has its strengths. (Warning - - the Colin Firth version does not offer sub-titles.)

Movie Review: Almost a new story
Summary: 5 Stars

Pride and Prejudice
What can I say? I have seen the latest Pride and Prejudice and the re-make from the 90's and still this movie suprises me. I never thought that it could be done like this. The movie is aprox 2 hrs and we all know that the long version of Pride and Prejudice is almost 5 hrs. Can the whole story be told in 2 hrs?
In this one, it can, but with a small change so that the whole story can be told. The end is what I would say is the biggest diffrence, but still, very satisfied with it. I liked it, even though the dresses did remind me of the movie "Gone with the wind". So if you are fond of those movies, you will love this one. And if you love Pride and prejudice, you will be satisfied. This is the story of a "american" Elizabeth with a "american" Mr. Darcy. Why do I say something like this?
Well, you will have to see that for yourself. Enjoy the movie!
Ps! I live in Sweden so if my spelling isn't correct, sorry!

Movie Review: Perfect Dialogue, a classic masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has the characters talking with such wit and speedy repartee it' smore like dialogue on machine gun fireworks.
Greer Garson is great as the wilful and 'prejudiced' Elizabeth Bennet. Mary Bolan (The Countess in that other great classic "The Women") is absolutely at her best in this role and so is Lawrence Olivier as the proud, elusive Mr. Darcy. His facial expression can convey an extraordinary change of feeling and mood almost per second, it is one great performance. All the supporting roles are jewels, particularly Mr. Bennett (Edmund Gwen) Lady de Burgh (Edna May Oliver) with a delightful horse-face, only possible to blossom in such perfection in certain ladies in England.
The costumes may be wrong for the period, but they are much more expressive of the inherent silliness of Mrs. Benet and her daughters, therefore highly effective in that respect.
