Movie Reviews of Pride and PrejudiceMovie Review: Charming, Fun, Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
"Pride and Prejudice" 2006, 1996, and 1940 are all excellent at 5-stars. This black and white version is funny, and charming, with good singing. It is different enough that it is enjoyable, even if you have just watched another version the night before.
One must first know, that the girls and their mother, were prevented from inheriting their home by an ancestor who had willed their house to their father, with the restriction that the home must always go to a male relative. Business was all a man's world. Jobs and good jobs were not available to women, mainly only: cooking, cleaning, or if you got lucky, as a nanny for six children. So the five, young women of this family, with no brothers, and an elderly father, were motivated to get married before their father died, and not end up on the street. Yet, some of the girls are not willing to accept just any man. This version sees their mother, desperate to match her daughters with husbands; showing the humor of the mother's efforts. It is funny. (Disclaimer: the reviewer does not suggest the plight of women in England was funny, and supports equality for women, do not send me letters).
The 2006 version has the most inviting dancing, and the best humor scene, with the girls getting ready to meet their callers. The 1996 version has a funny Mr. Collins fawning over Lady Catherine de Bourgh, a lovely Elizabeth, the most likeable Darcy, beautiful settings, and a mother who is just too funny. It is too bad this 1940 version is in black and white, as it has the most charming dresses (accurate or not), and the most pretty gardens. The elegant Elizabeth floats across the room in her flowing dress. Greer Garson is a wonderful Elizabeth. This 1940 version shows most believably how Elizabeth wins Mr. Darcy's affection with her character, topped with her piano playing. I like the different story twist here with Lady Catherine de Bourgh, played so well by the exceptional, character-actress, Edna May Oliver, with her grand, bouncing, steps. Mary is the attractive actress, Marsha Hunt, behind the spectacles. I like that they present a quietly attractive Mary, who seeka a husband as much as her sisters, different only in expecting her man will find her, if she improves her mind, and exhibits her singing. Her singing is supposed to be trying, but is actually very pleasant, should be, and I wished they had more of it. This has some good lines, with a funny Mr. Collins saying to Lady Catherine de Bourgh "So kind of you (to notice me), so condescending, so patronizing" (she has lowered herself from a place of believed superiority to speak with Mr. Collins, believed inferior and outside her normal social group). You must also know ahead that "prodigiously", often meaning "immensely", here means "surprisingly, miraculously, by some miracle". I like the ending of this version the best. A charming, wonderful film, you will watch again and again. This story is so good, they could make yet another version, a musical, with enough difference to entertain us even more. What are they waiting for?
