Movie Reviews of Pride and Glory

Movie Review: This was not believable
Summary: 2 Stars

There was some good character acting, but much of this was not believable. (Warning: Plot spoilers). For example:

1. Can we really believe that some number of police single other officer else knew about? And that they could burn it without anyone knowing about it. (There was no leakage on the radio?)

2. Can we really believe that a police officer's going into a store to rob it was enough to create a riot the size of the one featured at the end of the film?

3. Can we really believe that a drug dealer that does not want to be found would be found within the space of a day? And then when he WAS found, he would go out without a fight? (He was portrayed as a bad MF in the earliest parts of the movie. But he went out like a 'ho when he was found.)

4. If someone is a crooked cop, fair enough. But it seems that all these cops developed morality just in time to make a good scene. So, one cop has been on the take for some number of years. And knew what was his involvment in a murder plot. He didn't seem the faintest bit fussed -- until after a reporter called him for an interview. Then he conveniently needed to commit suicide after the interview. The next cop committed suicide by mob (that's the first time I've ever seen that). But he only committed suicide after there was a mob there which he could use in the service of his suicide-- and he only developed some morality at just that point.

Save your money. This is worth a rental price AFTER it gets off the "hot" shelf at Blockbuster (or wherever).

Movie Review: Nothing Worth Noting
Summary: 2 Stars

Norton and Farrell are good actors. Some of the dialogue in this actually sounds somewhat real. That's all I can really say for this movie. It's like the cliche-bot 5000 was ordered to write a script combining every movie with good cops and crooked cops over the last 25 years and this is what it churned out. We already know who is who, what they're like, and what's going to happen, more or less, by the second act, and to make up for the lack of dramatic tension we get treated to a couple of torture scenes and Farrell threatening to barbeque an infant, as well as Norton's brother's wife dying of cancer to give it a shot of pathos in a throwaway subplot. The Irish cops here were so sterotypical that I'm surprised they didn't have an extended scene of them drinking Guiness and hawking Lucky Charms. Apparently them being Irish cops earns it a comparison to "The Departed", which is kind of like comparing "Duece Bigalow, Male Gigolo" to "Midnight Cowboy". Hey speaking of Midnight Cowboy, wasn't there a time when John Voight was a pretty good actor? Wouldn't know it to see this. The ending is about as ridiculous and coincidence-dependent as anything I've seen. It's not horrific, but it's fairly bad. If you just need to see a cheesy movie about corrupt cops, can I suggest Training Day? Sure, it's also ridiculous, but it's also entertaining and slightly less predictable.

Movie Review: Oh brother
Summary: 2 Stars

In this movie's central New York City family, several generations (and many in each generation) have served as the Big Apple's "Finest."

Now, however, chief city detective Francis Tierney Sr. (Jon Voight) asks his son Ray (Edward Norton) to investigate a strange quadruple murder that the young cop would rather not touch. Now assigned to the missing persons department, Ray previously experienced life-wrenching loss in the emotional upheaval after an incident in which he covered-up for bad cops: His wife left him, and he is literally gun-shy.

But Ray shortly caves in to pressure from Francis Sr. Committed to finding the truth, Ray is increasingly disturbed as murders begin piling up, and all turns in the the complex case apparently lead back to the upper-upper West Side, Washington Heights precinct his brother Francis Jr. (Noah Emmerich) heads. Ray's brother-in-law, street cop Jimmy (Colin Farrell), not coincidentally, also works there.

Quite predictably, the story leads to another, much bigger cover-up, in which Jimmy has been dealing dope and planting evidence to convict sometimes innocent street toughs.

The ending is just as predictable as the entire story line, but there are many far better dirty cop stories than this one. Another film best left on the rental store shelf.

Movie Review: Surprisingly, Street Kings was better
Summary: 2 Stars

I recently watched both Pride and Glory and Street Kings within 2 weeks of each other and P & G is not a keeper while SK (surprise) is. STreet Kings will not win any academy awards, but it has an enetrtaining story that will keep you guessing, even if it is a bit over the top and uber macho at times. Pride is very dark, realistic, gritty, but not really in a good way. You don't care about or like any of these characters, not even to love to hate any of them. There is a realistic fist fight between Colin Farrell and Ed Norton that along with other scenes in the movie made me think some of the actors received actual marks on their bodies afterwards for. That's cool, but the story is depressing, heavy and ultimately uninteresting. In such a realistic piece, also, we are supposed to believe that Edward Norton and the best friend from the Truman Show are brothers? I don't think so, Ed has a rat face and the other guy looks like a sibling of Bill Clinton. minor quibble, all the acting is top notch, but the question becomes why waste it on such a pointless story? Try Traitor or Body of Lies if you want a recent real world scenario that will get you thinking in new directions, this is a dead end story that will do nothing but get you down beacuse you wasted over 2 hours and it didn't get any better than the first 15 minutes.

Movie Review: The Cutting Room Floor
Summary: 2 Stars

I watched this movie all the way through because of Edward Norton. Personally, I think he and Jodie Foster are the two smartest and best actors of their generation. However, I had real problems with this movie.

I have never seen John Voight chew up the scenery as badly as he did here. It is bound to be the directors fault. At the Christmas dinner they had us viewing John Voight's patriarchal character as a bad drunk. Turns out that was a non-sequitur. In another scene, a hoodlum comes to Colin Farrell's house. Farrell takes the guy out in the backyard and roughs the guy up. He threatens the guy to stay away from his home and his family, but the scene ends with the hoodlum unimpressed by his rough treatment and telling Farrell's character that he has just made a bad mistake. Based on that you would expect the film was going somewhere with this issue, but you never see this guy again. He isn't mentioned. He just didn't happen.

I rate it 2 stars for Norton and Farrell, but this is obviously no Guy Ritchie film. Cut it further, to an hour and a half and there might be something there.
