Movie Review: DELICIOUS AND LUSHES LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES
Summary: 5 Stars

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE....MOVIE ADAPTATION-2005

written by jane austin....screenplay written by deborah moggach....directed by joe wright...music by dario marianelli..i especially love "dawn" that is continually heard throughout the film.....and "a postcard to henry"....

ours is a love story between elizabeth bennett played by keira knightley and mr. darcy...played by matthew macfadyan....

keira is lovingly surrounded by a large family consisting of her mother...mrs. bennett....brenda blethyn.....father..mr. bennett played by donald sutherland...and 4 sisters....talulah riley...mary bennett....rosamund pike....jane.....jena malone...lydia......carey mulligan....kitty....

mr. darcy's best friend mr. bingley is played by simon woods...judi dench as lady catherine de lourg and claudia blakely as charlotte lucas..

the sun is just rising over the expanse of field in the early morning fog....birds start to sing sweetly...a gentle piano solo plays keira into our view...she is walking along in the dewy green grass her shoes and the bottom of her skirt wet with dew...deep in thought...reading her book...as she continues along her path home....she passes over a foot bridge with ducklings swimming about beneath...past servants already hanging ladies undergarments and white sheets on the clotheslines....

it is a lovely old mansion...flanked by two old growth trees....bricks covered with ivy.... leaded glass windows...sun blindingly reflecting off of them...as she walks past an open doorway.. an interior shot fills the frame with what was once elegance...now inside...deteriorated with the passage of time and neglect....we get a glimpse of mary playing that haunting melody "dawn" on the piano....jane appears in the foreground...the other two younger sisters whisk past her down the staircase....giggling loudly and happily about something...followed closely behind by the families irish wolfhound...

shadows and sunlight fill the room where mary plays the piano...the dining table....covered with disarray of the day....bundles of cloth and clothing tossed willy nilly.....bonnets with ribbon flowing down hang on dining chairs...organization the least of importance.

through a side door we again engage keira as she approaches the entrance....up charming wide steps flanked by grand massive columns....she stops to look amusingly at her parents through beautiful old weathered window panes.....mr. and mrs. bennett seem to be discussing something quite important.....

the sisters are all gathered listening by the door to hear about a ball that will take place within days and news of a potential handsome wealthy suitor for one of the girls ....excitement and anticipation abound!.....

the drawing room where the family gathers....catches the eye with a multitude of pleasurable set design....antiques....period pieces...fine oil paintings..hand painted chests ..french clocks...brass candlesticks...our girls sit oblivious to any.....only caring about what they shall wear to the ball..joy and music fill this house....

at the ball....every one is in attendance..everyone dances gaily....the massive hall doors open wide.....simon and matthew and simon's sister...are all formally introduced to the assembled..keira and matthew's eyes meet instantly....the attraction is undeniable but bridled....brenda brings the girls to formally be introduced to this trio who stand in front of a massive walk in fireplace.....he dare not lay his eyes on her for very long....that would be a most impolite thing to do of course....

rosamund and simon dance the night away and become enamored with each other.....

keira overhears matthew talking to simon later on about her in an unflattering light...she is hurt but has too much pride to show that she cares.....later they have a chance to engage in conversation....matthew asks keira..."so what do you recommend to encourage affection?"....she replies...with a sarcastic grin..."dancing....even if one's partner is barely tolerable." with that she turns and walks away with a bemused smile on her face....he stands dump founded....a priceless moment to be sure.....

later that night she and rosamund whisper under the covers like school girls about simon and matthew both.....again the evening shades of night dimly cast shadows on worn curtains and unpainted window panes over a unadorned window seat.

life goes on for the bennetts...it rains cats and dogs...the sun shines...nighttime descends....morning comes back around...

keira goes to the chateau that simon is renting for the season..in order to fetch her sister...rosemund that has been sick in bed there for days....the chateau is incredible....as one might expect...grandeur and aristocratic luxury overflow....

keira encounters matthew yet again...again a strained meeting....

we see the sister's and mother are all in town to greet the returning british soldiers of witch one is an attractive mr. wickham.... while keira stays at the chateau to attend her sister..she and matthew seem to have a continuous love hate relationship....full of inquiry and attraction and anamosity and even furry....finally keira's mother and sisters come to retrieve her and rosamund....

there is a lovely sensual scene here where we see matthew take keira's hand just for a meaningful moment...holding on just a second more than need be..as she steps up into the carriage..their eyes lock...he then turns and walks away....we see a close up of his hand clinching and unclinching as if struck by a lightening bolt....

later another wonderful scene in the meadow....beautiful tall hunky matthew dressed in blue velvet jacket and black top hat...rides his powerful steed along the creek side while keira watches him from the opposite bank..accompanied by rupert....matthew takes one look at him and turns and gallops away with his tailcoat flowing behind him...an interesting side note here.....matthew doesn't even ride....some trick photography!

another formal ball....keira looks desperately around for matthew....matthew follows behind her....we see keira dancing but not with her true love....all the ladies dressed in virginal white....men in formal attire....a sight to behold....finally matthew gets up the nerve to ask keira to dance...she agrees...their one dance turns out to be in excruciating slow motion...just the two on a crowded dance floor...we are privy to their private conversation...their built up anguish explodes quietly..the music ends...he bows...she curtsy's....the dance is over.....

events transpire...an unsuitable suitor for keira is dissuaded....an elopement by jena and rupert....matthew and simon and company depart for london....reluctantly matthew is leaving keira behind....

keira receives an invitation to visit judi dench.....while visiting her friend charlotte....while there....she is greeted by matthew who is also visiting....he is judi's nephew.....the tension and attraction again undeniable between them...the two appear equally quite striking against a background of richness of colors and opulence in this drawing room ...

they encounter each other dramatically one rainy sunday after church...in a gazebo while rain drips from their hair eyes and lips....resentments overflow and misunderstanding shouted at each other in an emotional scene...in one of the most memorable lines as they stand so close that they practically touch lips...matthew sears into keira's eyes with his incredible blue eyes..."forgive me madam for taking up so much of your time"...as he walks slowly turns and away from her off
into the storm....

so many moments....matthew leaves a note for keira in the middle of the night....never speaking....

they meet again briefly at his magnificant mansion...before keira runs off....leaving him behind.....

eventually simon comes to ask for rosamund's hand in marriage....it is a funny scene before hand when he rehearses what he will say to her...outside with matthew....keira wishes her sister all the happiness in the world....never letting on about her tragic disappointment and love for matthew....

judi makes a late night unexpected visit to keira with warning that she stay away from matthew as he has been betrothed to her daughter since birth...

keira walks in the meadow early the next morning...in the distance she sees matthew approaching from out of the dense fog...he is gorgeous and powerful... walking with such purpose...towards keira..."dawn" is playing.....she can only stare at him with jet black piercing eyes.....they speak gently and sweetly to each other...."you have bewitched me..body and soul" he tells her...."well then" she continues.....and looks into his eyes...."your hands are cold"....she kisses his fingers...their foreheads touch each other in such a way that it seems as a perfect heart is formed.....and as the rising sun shines brightly between their faces.. a perfect silhouette...

keira waits impatiently while matthew asks donald for her hand in marriage.....matthew waits impatiently while keira has an intimate conversation with the father that so adores this.....his second eldest daughter...donald gives his blessing and amusingly yells after keira as she runs out the door...."if any young men come to marry our kitty...send them in!"....

the two sit cross legged looking into each others eyes..up on the roof top..

"how are you this evening my dear" matthew says to keira....she replies.."you may call me lizzy for every day....my pearl for sunday....goddess divine....but only on special occasions.....you may only call me mrs. darcy when you are completely and perfectly and incandescently happy"...

matthew kisses his bride sweetly on her forehead.....then kisses her on each cheek....then he softly kisses her lips and says in a gorgeous deep matthew macfadyan voice while holding her face in his hands........"mrs. darcy".........
