Movie Reviews of Pride & PrejudiceMovie Review: This might not be BBC, but it sure is Good! Summary: 5 Stars
To the reviewer who wrote "Austin is rolling over in her grave" and to anyone who shares that opinion, I wanted to point out a few things.
This version of the Austin classic might not have young ladies in huge dresses, gentlemen with tall hats, the beautiful English countryside or the politeness with which they insult each other but it does have that same "hunt" for a husband/wife, and that adorable attraction between Elizabeth and Darcy.
I think that in order to appreciate the connection between this movie and the brilliant novel, you need to understand the "Mormon" culture.
First of all, Jane Austin wrote about Lydia's and Kitty's "unchecked behavior" and their "silliness". In the LDS church, we teach our young women to dress modestly and wear Sunday Best (which should be modest)to church. So for a Mormon to watch this movie and see the outfit that Lydia has on as she is driving to Church is as "shocking" as Lydia's and Kitty's "unchecked behavior" and their "silliness" was to the people of Jane Austin's time.
Secondly, In Jane Austin's novel Lydia and Wickham run away together and they live together unmarried. Yes, that's shocking to Mormons, too, but I think that the makers of this film probably wanted to tone that down and have them elope. God teaches us that we should NOT live together unmarried. In this movie, Wickham says "I mean, there's always living in sin." He is obviously talking about living together unmarried. In the LDS church, this a big NO. We believe that this is a sin, a scandal and that it is shocking. I imagine that is why the produces would want to tone the film down a little and have them elope. Elopement in the LDS church is shocking too, as we believe that we should be married for time and all eternity in the House of the LORD (and believe me that does not include the "Wee Chapel on the Strip").
Thirdly, (is that a word?)in the Latter-Day Saint culture, we teach marriage. (More importantly, we teach HAPPY marriage). We are taught that a man cannot get to heaven without a woman and a woman cannot get to heaven without a man. Marriage is essential for exaltation. (Trust me, a Happy marriage is even MORE essential.) So that brings us to the "hunt" for a worthy companion. In Jane Austins novel, the opening line is "It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." That opening line has every suggestion of the "hunt" for a spouse whether agressive or coy.
In conclusion, I simply wanted to add that this movie does not replace the authenticity of the BBC six hour movie or the novel but it certainly updates it and gives it a little bit of a twenty-first century flair. I think that the "religious fervor" of the Mormons complements a perfectly wonderful plot. I like this movie A LOT and I hope that they continue to make fun movies such as this.
