Movie Reviews of Predator [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: If you own this on standard DVD don't bother with the Blu-ray.
Summary: 4 Stars

If you own this on standard DVD don't bother with the Blu-ray. The video quality "IS NOT IMPROVED", (AS WITH MOST OLDER MOVIES THAT ARE TRANSFERED TO Blu-ray).

Movie Review: Predator is blu
Summary: 4 Stars

An old classic that has aged with pride. I guess the picture quality is the best, that has been possible to achieve from the original.

Movie Review: Wait for a better release.
Summary: 3 Stars

While the movie itself is a pretty good action sci-fi flick that has a not-so-subtle commentary on the 80's action hero phenomenon, this disk is not. You get no extra features for one. Another thing to consider is the movie on this disk is going to be grainy. That's not a fault of the transfer so much, though the movie is encoded in mpeg2. The movie was filmed in the Super 35 (grainy format) using Kodak film (that was also grainy). Aside from color separation the difference in resolution won't be that big. Still it's likely the best looking transfer you will ever see for Predator.

Now I've been getting different reports on the audio. Amazon is saying all you get is English 5.1 DTS-HD (lossless audio), but I have been getting reports the disk will also have English Dolby Digital 4.0, French Dolby Stereo and Spanish Dolby Mono. I'm also getting conflicting reports on subtitles where Amazon is saying English and Spanish subtitles while I hear you will also get English SDH, Korean and Chinese.

With all these misreports it makes me wonder if there is another release on the horizon. Either way I would wait for and get the mess of extras that came on the Special Edition DVD instead of the single disk with just the grainy movie. That's right. All you get is a theatrical trailer on this release and the fact the disk is D-Box ready (that's a motion control system installed inside a chair so it moves and shakes to events in a movie or video game... don't see many people having this in their living rooms).

Verdict? I say wait. They WILL release a blu-ray version with a score of extras if for no other reason than the fact they already made one on DVD.

Movie Review: Fair to poor blu-ray, but better than DVD
Summary: 3 Stars

There are a plethora of reviews of the movie, but my review is mostly a comparison of the BD vs DVD version. I won't discuss its merits as movie.

Alas, while there is substantial improvement in the video via BD's high resolution, its a disappointment compared to many other BD releases. Most video images lack sharpness. Since old movies like Battle of Britain, 2001: Space Odyssey or Clockwork Orange, can compete with recent films like Troy, its clear the folks who mastered Predator did a poor job.

Audio does not make full use of imaging although its clearer and more bombastic than the DVD, and since 5.1 Dolby only came in the 1990s, that point can be excused.

However, since Predator is sold as a discount BD disk, if you don't own it on DVD, its well worth it, but if you do, think twice, the improvements are not that stark. However, the BD made if far clearer to me the pilots were still in the chopper after it was downed, the skinned corpses of the Hopper team appear more detailed and ghastly, there is more oomph in the assault on the rebel scene due to the improved sound, you can see the rounds in the mini-gun zip through the gun and its clear how its fed through the backpack ammo case, you can make out the MTV t-shirt throughout most of Jesse Ventura's scenes, you can make out where the commandos were hit by the predator, which was vague on the DVD. So overall, its an improvement, and worth 3 stars.

Movie Review: Run through the jungle action
Summary: 3 Stars

Look there goes Arnold running through the jungle shooting large guns and keeping his dialogue to a minimum. His friends are doing the same thing only they are getting killed. If you like movies that have high popcorn value then you should buy this Bluray disc. It is the best transfer so far of this movie available in any video format. If you have seen the DVD versions of this movie you will know what I'm talking about. They are all washed out and super murky. There are still some problems with this transfer of course- it is anything but perfect but it still looks pretty good for an action film from the 80's. If you want this movie for special effects or to show off your great bluray system this isn't the disc for you. However if you just want to watch a decent scifi movie filled with blood and frantic alien chase scenes then break out the popcorn- send the kids to bed and prepare to watch some mindless action and 80's style jungle warfare violence.
