Movie Reviews of Practical Magic (Snap Case Packaging)

Movie Review: Enchanting!
Summary: 5 Stars

Pardon the pun. How else do you describe an incredible, fun, loving movie of two sisters who can't seem to help getting into trouble? Exactly. Enchanting.
The movie begins with two doting aunts telling their orphaned neices the story of their heritige. It was a curse that "any man who dared love an Ownes woman was doomed to die." And it happened.
The neices are Gillian and Sally Owens, two sisters who are, well, witches, like their aunts. Their aunts take them in, and give them choclate for breakfast, no brushing teeth or hair, and teach them magic.
Well, it's not long before Gillian runs away, and Sally gets married. Then, Sally's husband dies, leaving her with two little girls-Kylie and Antonia. And Gillian gets into trouble...big trouble with a boyfriend.
Suddenly, with a whirlwind of magic and mistakes, they have a ghost, a possession, two angry aunts, a cop, and, oh yeah, a Phone Tree day.
This movie is a wonderful blend of fantasy, magic, and love.
This contains many good quotes, such as:

Gillian: Have you ever spread your arms up and spun around really really fast? Well, that's what love is like.

Sally: Since when is being a slut a crime in this family?

Now, I'm going to go read the book and leave you with the words of Aunt Jet:
"There's a little witch in all of us."

Movie Review: What a Gem of a Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie a few years ago and recently re-rented it and it was even better the second time around! Sweet without being sickening, it focuses on the coming of age of two sisters that happen to be witches. Living with their two eccentric aunts (played wonderfully by two of my favorite actresses, Stockard Channing and Diane Wiest) they grow up rather....eccentric. Children taunt them for being witches but that makes their bond grow that much more.

This is a very touching movie that leaves you feeling hopeful. This is not a ridiculous movie about witchcraft like The Craft, but in watching it, you start to believe in witches yourself. The soundtrack is fabulous also, I ordered it and listen to it whenever I need a mental boost.

As to the book, I would recommend reading the book before seeing the mvoie. I made the mistake of seeign the movie first and was so disappointed with Alice Hoffman's novel. Do not expect the closeness of the two sisters in the movie to be that way in the book! In fact it will break your heart.

But all in all, rent/buy/borrow this movie if you can and invite your closest girlfriends over. Drink a margarita or two and enjoy!

Movie Review: A wonderful, whimsical, and enchanting flick for the witch in all of us.
Summary: 5 Stars

Not your typical chick flick but a very good chick flick nonetheless. My second favorite movie of all time. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are wonderful as actresses in this movie. Stockard Channing also makes a wonderful cast member as do the other supporting actors and actresses. The movie begins with their great-great-grandmother being tried for witchcraft and escaping the gallows only to be banished to an island where her lover never came to her, while she was pregnant. In a moment of dispair, she cast a spell on herself that she would never feel the pain of love again. It grew into a curse on any man who dared love an Owens woman. Sally (Bullock) wants nothing more than to be normal. Gillian (Kidman) can't wait to fall in love. When she grows up, Gillian falls for the "Dracula-cowboy" named Jimmy Angelove. The two accidentally kill Angelove and try to bring him back, only to have him posses Gillian. I won't ruin the ending. If you haven't seen this movie, or even if it is an old favorite, like it is for me, I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in the occult or has a little bit of witchiness to them. Happy viewing!

Movie Review: Powerful Performance by Kidman
Summary: 5 Stars

While many reviews are positive and a few of them negative in this section, I found it to be a fantastic tale about women and the Craft. Yes, Bullock could give a better performance, but I don't think it is about her or Kidman. Instead, I challenge all of the people who have written negative reviews to examine EVERY DAY LIFE and then watch the movie. I found this a heart-warming tale about the "magical" instances in our childhood. As a child, I was told of curses, boogey stories, voodoo, magic and it was left for me to decide what to believe. Depending on the viewer's BELIEFS, the story could or could not happen. The thing that I ultimately think made the movie was the special effects and the composition of the scenes. The director (Dunne) utilized them in a way that they did not stand out. Rather, the effects were blended seemlessly into the film. To those doubters, watch it first, then again, noting the effects. Only after the second time, decide wheather you like it or not. Overall, I found the movie (DVD) captivating. I will be buying this on DVD very soon.

Movie Review: I HATE THE WIDESCREEN VERSION !!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I own tis particular dvd.... while it's very entertaining to watch, what i hate is the widescreen format..
Having eyes which are extremely light sensitive ,this format irritates them to no end...!!!
Sandra Bullock is perfect as Sally Owens ( the older sister) who refuses to even admit that she 's a witch ...much less practice magick at all!!!
Nicole Kidman is wickedly funny as her younger sister Gillian...
The two little girls who play Sally& Gillian as children are
supurb!
Being a younger sister myself,I really identify with Gilian
Owens!!! ( and Antonia)
Not only are Stockard Channing & Diane Weist great actresses ,but they play the best parts of their careers in this film!!!
This Dvd is highly praised as not only a great film, but as one of the most honestly told stories about heridtery witch craft ever made... I wonder if Griffin Dunne had the help of actual witches( wiccans) & a prerelease chant before the film's popularity...
