Movie Reviews of Power Yoga - Total Body WorkoutMovie Review: Quality Yoga instruction, without distraction. Summary: 5 Stars
I have to get this out of the way, but I think Rodney should have worn black shorts instead of the blue ones he has on. Black shorts tend to hide the shadows that are cast by various 'bulges', whereas Rodney's shorts don't leave much to the imagination.
Other than that, though, it's actually a really good program. I like that it's just a straightforward narration of what to do (raise your arms to the side, breathe in, step forward with your right foot, breathe out...) so that you can basically follow along without even having to really look at the screen much. That's always an issue for me, because most yoga poses don't involve a "turn your neck to the side and try to see the TV" aspect. With other Yoga programs, though, I find I always have to try and look at the screen to see what they're doing.
There's also not a lot of the "spiritual" talk about yoga in this video, which I also like. A lot of other Yoga videos I've seen tend to get bogged down with talk about opening chakras and such - which is fine for those who are already familiar with the poses and movements - but it's a big distraction for someone who just wants to know what to do with the actual, physical parts of the body that exist in this corporeal dimension of the universe. Pausing every 3 seconds to tell me about my "heart-center" for five minutes doesn't move my workout along, and Rodney avoids this type of distraction.
The only technical problem with the video as a whole, is that because it's narrated, the pace of the breathing instructions does not always line up with what the instructor is actually doing, or what you'd really be doing. For example, sometimes he says "breathe in, breathe out" without even pausing to LET you breathe in in the first place. Try it... see how much air you can suck in during the 1-second it takes for someone to say "breathe in." I generally use his breathing instructions as an overall guideline, but try to keep the individual breaths at my own pace. The benefit to the narration though, is that the audio is nice and clear without all of the wind noise associated with taping outdoors.
Because of my particular style of yoga practice (I'm just in it for the physical benefits, not the spiritual ones), I think this is one of the better Yoga programs I've seen... if not the best. It's like being IN an actual class where the instructor is telling you what to do in real-time without having to pause a lot for side-talks.
Enjoy, and namaste!
