Movie Reviews of Portrait of JennieMovie Review: Portrait of Jennie Summary: 5 Stars
Produced by the fabled David O. Selznick, "Jennie" remains one of the screen's few romantic ghost stories, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" being another worthy entry. Still while "Ghost" is a purely witty concoction, "Jennie" is decidedly darker and more mysterious. Director Dieterle creates a smoky, other-worldly atmosphere in this utterly unique entry that keeps the viewer slightly on-edge. There is indeed something very sad about Jennie-and Eben too: they seem like two lost lovers who, by the arbitrary whims of time and fate, just miss connecting. Don't let "Jennie" pass you by.
Movie Review: i DARE you not to love this movie Summary: 5 Stars
compare it to "breakfast at tiffanys": if you dont love this movie, you have no heart. is it one of the best ever? no. but its one of my favorites, with joseph cotten as a hack artist who meets and falls in love and paints the portrait of a young woman, whom we eventually learn has died years before. amazing cinematography, brilliant score, and terrific perfs by cotten, jennifer jones, and a strong supporting cast. btw, i also love "somewhere in time": the pseudo-remake with christopher reeve and jane seymour. but "portrait of jennie" is the best. so there!
Movie Review: A spiritual love story Summary: 5 Stars
One reason I don't give 5 stars very much is so that I can say that a movie like this is above the crowd.
This love affair of an artist with a ghost could of have been done badly,
but here it is a story of two twinned souls displaced in time and space
that find each other.
The story turns their tragedy of love and loss into great art.
The acting and filming in places could have been better, but were
well enough to get a special effects Academy Award.
I'm very glad I saw this movie.
Movie Review: Love beyond reason! Summary: 5 Stars
Like "Peter Ibbetson" (the sound film) or "Wuthering Heights" (the novel), "Portrait of Jeannie" is a perfect example of love "fou" story. Love "fou" is a kind of surralistic tale of passion beyond reason and reality. That is the point to understand so passionate film. This magnificent movie is a triumph for producer David O. Selznick and Jennifer Jones in the role of Jeannie. Great performances by Joseph Cotten and Ethel Barrymore.
Movie Review: Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
A fantasy love story that captivates you from the very first introduction of "Jennie". Today this would be considered a "chick flick", but it holds the male attention as well.
Jennifer Jones gives a sterling performance. She convinces you that she's 12 years old, then 14, 16, 18. You will have to watch the movie twice to see how she "grows" from 5'2" to 5'9" (ages 12 to 18) in just over 2 years real time.
