Movie Reviews of Porcupine Tree: Arriving SomewhereMovie Review: Who Are These Guys? Summary: 5 Stars
I was given this dvd as a gift. This group was a total mystery to me. Nobody, including myself, had ever heard of this band. The only thing negative that I can say about this is that you get zero information about the band. I didn't ever know the members names until the end of the disc. I'm guessing that the band may be from England but I am not even sure of that.
What I am sure of is that discovering this band reminded me of Christmas morning as a little kid. The band is awesome. The lead guitar/singer is very talented and the drummer captures your attention and won't let go. The vocals were so well done and I loved how the group went from hard rock to super melodies in seconds.
This is a dvd that you really should treat yourself to. There is not a bad song on it and I must say that what amazes me most about this is how surprised I am that had never heard of a band that is this talented.
They remind me of so many different bands with their complex music and great vocals. The only reason that I rated it at five stars is because six stars wasn't an option.
Movie Review: great surround mix, and it's prog Summary: 5 Stars
I am newbee to Porcupine Tree. I have heard their last two albums, and decided to explore their music after Alex Lifeson gave them a nice mention in Guitar Player magazine. After hearing their most recent discs, and reading about how they are a prog band, I thought their fan base had no idea what prog was. The newer material is not prog at all. But after hearing and seeing this DVD, I have been introduced to more of their music and now realize why they have been called a prog band. They have a catalog of older material that is definately progressive.
I like the surround mix as it has instruments in the surrounds, along with the crowd cheering (I helped produce several surround music DVDs that I won't mention here) but few on the market have a really enveloping mix like this one. The fact that it was shot in a smaller, more intimate venue makes this style of mixing more realistic feeling. If it were in a huge auditorium, the instrument in surround approach would have been cheesy. I also like their use of DTS encoding - all music DVDs should have DTS.
Movie Review: Something fans of quality music can enjoy! Summary: 5 Stars
Porcupine Tree has to be one of the best bands of the past decade. I just recently bought a cd of there's a year ago and have since been blown away by there talent. This dvd is something that critical fans of quality music will enjoy. I am fortunate to own some excellent equipment and the audio quality is top notch. The instruments are very clear and distinguishable. The video quality is not as perfect as you would hope but too me it is acceptable. I am sure they didn't have an unlimited budget and had to spend less somewhere. The video editing is perfect for me. I actually enjoy watching them play. I am not a fan of the Iron Maiden approach of changing screen shots every 2-4 seconds. This is a must buy if you are PT fan. If you never heard of them and are interested in quality progressive rock - this is something that you might want to experiment. I hope this review shed some light and wasn't one of this - "this rocks" - useless reviews.
Movie Review: Great Music, Super Performance, What Else Do You Want? Summary: 5 Stars
I stumbled across Porcupine Tree's music a couple of years ago and have loved every minute of the journey ever since. I saw them play live last year and while nothing can take the place of being there in person, Arriving Somewhere is a resounding "next best thing." There's a great variety of songs across several different eras/albums and the mix and camera work is outstanding. Some may not be a fan of the visual effects that go from color to black and white, and from clear to grainy, but these effects are just another winning touch that makes this DVD so memorable. I grew up as a huge Rush fan, and while I wouldn't compare Rush's music to PT's music, the Tree has had the same effect on me that Rush did--I absolutely can't stop listening to and appreciating the music. Other artists now pale in comparison to Porcupine Tree. If you're a fan of great rock music and want to see an impressive band at its best, get this DVD. You won't regret it.
Movie Review: No center channel - Awesome 4.1 mix Summary: 5 Stars
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the surround mix has no sound from the center channel, and maybe this is proof that all the speakers don't need to be used to get a stellar mix, as this is the best 4.1 mix I've ever heard. The following quote came from the official PT myspace page in response to my question about the absence of the center channel - "SW has said in interviews that he chose not to make much use of the centre channel for the live DVD, since it was a very unrealistic thing to do for a soundtrack to a live performance. I believe there are some solos and crowd noise in there, that's all."
Some other minor issues with the DVD are - the layer freeze is distracting (couldn't this be inserted somewhere else, like in between songs?), and the video alternating from color to black and white is not my style. However, the performances, from one of the best current rock bands, make it easy to overlook these minor issues.
