Movie Reviews of Porcupine Tree: Arriving SomewhereMovie Review: Arriving But Not Leaving Your DVD Player Summary: 5 Stars
Those who know the pleasures of Porcupine Tree are growing in great numbers based upon their recent tour of the East Coast. Never saw a crowd for a PTree show like the one in Boston last week. And with great reason, this is progressive artistry at its best. (Based upon the new songs played at the show, be prepared for another masterpiece in early 2007). Now we have this brilliant DVD to play, disect and play again. "Arriving Somewhere" is masterful. The 5.1 sound is incredible. The layers of sound that come from Steve Wilson and crew are remarkable. Gavin Harrison's drumming alone is worth the price! The taping of the Chicago shows from last years "Deadwing" tour is well captured here. The song list heavily favors "In Abstentia" and "Deadwing" but there are great versions of "Hate Song", "Even Less" and "Don't Hate Me" which just rock. Although some have complained, the video production works well for me. And so that the overhead videos do not detract from the enjoyment of seeing the band play, the second DVD has the full videos with the music in the background. Great idea.
The quality in packaging, production and sound that Steve Wilson has shown for years now continues. "Arriving Somewhere" will knock your socks off, in the comfort of your living room. Be prepared to stay there for a long time. This is a great time piece for a remarkable band, a snapshot of PTree, 2005. My highest compliments to Mssrs. Wilson, Barbieri, Edwin, Harrison and Wesley and mates. Great Band, Great Show, Great DVD!!!
Movie Review: Glad it arrived here!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Tell me that Porcupine Tree isn't the greatest band on planet Earth at this time (I dare you!) This DVD was everything I hoped for if not more. These guys have to be the most talented bunch assembled together since I don't know when. The sound is great and there is a good representation of their styles and repertoire. Of course you always wish there was a certain favorite song included, but we can't reasonably expect the band to accomodate every individual taste, can we? I appreciate how the film crew includes each member and doesn't focus in only on Steven Wilson. Each member of this group contributes to the nth degree, icluding touring member John Wesley. Great vocal harmonies, rhythm guitar and some awesome lead guitar solos by this young man. My hats off to him. I haven't made it to the second disc. I was mainly concerned with the concert footage which didn't disappoint! Love the humble side of Steven on the last track (don't want to give it away!) He is a genious, but most importantly a music fan who wants to produce great music. And I think that's what fans appreciate the most about this great band. They put everything into their music, including the cover art and memorabilia. If you don't get a chance to see these guys, this should pacify you until they arrive somewhere near you...
Movie Review: KILLER BAND! Summary: 5 Stars
I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to music and bands but for some reason this band was not on my musical radar. What a mistake! A buddy turned me on to a couple of tracks, one being Blackest Eyes, and I found myself doing a double take. I wasted no time in ordering this DVD and continue to be thoroughly impressed. This is one killer live band! The musicianship is top shelf as are the compositions. Gavin Harrison is not only a superb drummer with great chops, he is extremely tasty. He doesn't let his chops get in the way of playing for the song.
I've never been one who needed a band to have a flashy light show and dry ice machines or fireworks to impress me. I'm all about the music and this band delivers bigtime! There's no striking of the obligatory rock star poses here, the band pretty much stands fairly still but still kicks all kinds of you-know-what. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who likes superb, well executed rock tunes on the progressive side.
You can keep your overly choreographed shows with the obligatory scantily clad dancers who add nothing to the show. That's all fluff and eye candy. This is ear candy and it's the real deal!!

Movie Review: Ladies and gentleman ..... Porcupine Tree Summary: 5 Stars
If your a fan of porcupine Tree, you'll love this DVD. Shot during the "Deadwing" tour (when I was first exposed to the band) This DVD highlights the amazing musicianship of the band. Their renditions of "Open Car" and "Blackest Eyes" shows that this progressive rock band can ROCK hard as anybody as well a being a sonically atmospheric band as a Radiohead with songs like "Arriving Somewhere" and "Start of Something Beautiful. And if your a johnny come lately fan like I am; you'll be pining to check out their back catalog because of old songs like the aural epic "Mother and Child Divided and the lyrically caustic but brilliant "So Called Friend". But what really makes this a "must have" is the musically air tight brilliance of all 5 members and the visionary genius of Steve Wilson PT's front man and songwriter. This dvd is beautifully shot and artistically interspersed with black and white, grainy and filtered color effects as well as multi-camera angles that punctuates the well paced editing. This film documentary, as I see it is a masterpiece in cinematic style. A must HAVE for any Porcupine Tree fan and a great introductory to this underrated great band.
Movie Review: PT Deliver Live Summary: 5 Stars
Of the 150 or so DVD concerts that I own, this is the one I cherish the most.I discovered PT a little over a year ago by way of a concert review blog(certainly not FM radio)and was hooked immediately.A proper introduction of the band should be through the dvd audio discs,In Absentia,Deadwing, and Stupid Dream, but buy the cd's if you are not equipped with a multichannel dvd player. If a band this strong was releasing music in the 70's,they would be huge, but alas corporate FM radio doesn't air a sniff, and I defy anyone to tell me that this wonderfully melodic, complex, agressive, dreamy music is not commercially viable. It deserves to be heard, but enough of my rant. The DTS soundtrack on this dvd defies words.Steve Wilson is a musical genious.Anyone getting caught up in the fuzzy editing of this dvd is really missing the point.(I am usually quick to point out the flaws)The songs, sound, and performance are stellar.Gavin Harrison is a monster on drums.I've read that the boys from Rush are big fans,so much so that Alex Lifeson is appearing on the new album do out in April.I can't wait. Please give this band a try. They are brilliant and deserve to be supported.
