Movie Reviews of Porcupine Tree: Arriving SomewhereMovie Review: A Must Have DVD Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, it's spring of 2002 and I have traveled three hours to visit my brother. We are both audiophiles with quite exceptional stereos and visits usually involve a fair amount of music listening. Shortly after I arrive he tells me "You've got to hear this, I picked it up this week while on business in Seattle". He puts on an original LP pressing of Porcupine Tree's "Signify". All four sides of this album are played and I don't utter the first word. You see, I've been a musician for 40+ years and I am bored with just about all new popular music. Most is just dreck. I had just experienced music that so captured me like no other in more than ten years. A few months later "In Absentia" is released. I buy it. Excellent. In 2005 "Deadwing" is released. Again, excellent. I see both of the US tours in '05. I see them again fall of '06. I'm a damned kid again! I start buying deeper into their back catalog and it's all good. I'm a fan.
"Arriving Somewhere" is a superb DVD that is at the top of the heap sonically. The music is well crafted, intelligent and the best of the prog genre out there. Although not a part of the studio recording players, John Wesley is used for the live shows for guitar and vocals and he is perfect in this role. Steven Wilson was wise and fortunate to have tapped this guy. I am a drummer. A white-haired-been-around-the-block drummer and I'm here to tell ya that Gavin Harrison, within this genre, is one of the best on the planet and this DVD is proof. Some may be put off with the switching between color and black-and-white and film flicker but, hey, it's art. It really didn't detract from my enjoyment. From both a technical and artistic standpoint it is one of the very best concert DVD's I've seen. Required viewing.
Movie Review: Innovative and Brilliant! Summary: 5 Stars
Others have described the details and so I will not bother. Simply stated, PT are a superb progressive rock band. No other band has astounded me by their melody, flair and quality since I heard 'Permanent Waves' and 'Moving Pictures' (Rush) back in the early eighties. For the first time I have actually enjoyed repeatedly watching this DVD and obtaining even more pleasure every time I experience it. Their website will direct you for a download for a CD version of a similar concert recorded in Germany which is not available on regular CD here at Amazon or anywhere that I am aware of.
I am grateful for Steven Wilson's genius and the artistry of Messrs. Gavin Harrison, Richard Barbieri and Colin Edwin.
A 9 /10 for production (sound) on the DVD. A tad heavy on the bass until the end of Lazarus which then satisfyingly goes away. I for one got used to the "aged" appearance of the film and quite like it now....lends for a more interesting and varied "look".
"Deadwing" on DTS available here on Amazon is by far the most perfectly recorded audio I have ever heard. I am comparing this to the music I heard at the CES, Vegas '04 and 05 (Audiophile Suites) where companies showcase systems that easily top 6 figures. Some examples often used are the Roy Orbison and Eagles in Australia DVDs recorded in DTS. The Deadwing DTS audio CD easily tops anything I have heard in terms of its clarity, power and sounstage. Brilliantly recorded by Elliot Scheiner this disc is easily reference quality and will push your system to its limits. The sound production has to be heard to be appreciated. Another example that showcases Porcupine Tree at their best.
Movie Review: ¡Rock total! Summary: 5 Stars
Movie Review: Best band on planet currently, shot live Summary: 5 Stars
First off, if you have not heard of Porcupine Tree, start hearing and purchase this DVD. There is nothing like a live show, therefore I hate live CD's or DVDs. They just do not capture the real thing. They are not loud enough, not as emotional as the really being there, and flat. But this one changes the rules and is like no other. I was at the shows that this was recorded at, and this represents those shows as closely as any live recording put on album, tape, 8-track, CD or DVD EVER has.
Porcupine Tree is the most innovative, original, heavy, mellow, beautiful, emotional and techical band on the planet right now. Steven Wilson is a musical genius. His work with Porcupine Tree is only a portion of this man's talent. No-Man, Bass Communion, Blackfield and all his other side gigs are pure perfection, Porcupine Tree being the best of them. This DVD represents this band to the T. The band is so talented it is scary. The show was incredible, even the mess up on Trains was great. There is a great blend of what this band represents on this DVD, all of which will not let you down.
If you are into extremely talented musicians, beautifully heavy, orchestral and mellow, progressive and original, this is THE DVD to purchase.
If fact, bundle it up with MUST HAVE Porcupine Tree CD's that you can get here as well, DEADWING, IN ABSENTIA and if it is still here, LIGHTBULB SUN. These 3 albums are a roller coaster ride in music, beautiful and soaring vocals and harmonies, Heavy instrumental pieces, infectious pop and progressive brilliance.
Movie Review: great concert DVD Summary: 5 Stars
The "Arriving Somewhere..." DVD was recorded during Porcupine Tree's two-night stay at the Park West in Chicago on October 11-12, 2005. Having seen their concert the night before at Bogart's in Cincinnati, I knew the Chicago audience was in for a treat.
The song selection is mostly from 2005's "Deadwing" but also includes tracks from "In Absentia", "Recordings", "Lightbulb Sun" and "Stupid Dream". The band was in top form and played for an appreciative audience. One of the cool things that struck me about this concert was that the band chose to play a few semi-obscure B-sides like Revenant, Mother and Child Divided, and So Called Friend.
Some have commented that they dislike the grainy film style of some of the shots favored by editor Lasse Hoile but I think it is visually interesting and definitely in keeping with Porcupine Tree's aesthetic.
In addition to the first disc which includes the Chicago footage, a second disc includes two songs from a Rockpalast TV broadcast, the Lazarus music video, drummer Gavin Harrison's ultra fun and cool Cymbal Song, and a photo gallery. A beautiful and haunting song plays over the photo gallery. While this song has apparently not been titled or released before now, let's call it Gallery Music for the meantime.
I have used the "Arriving Somewhere..." DVD to turn some of my friends into Porcupine Tree fans. I highly recommend this DVD to die hard PT fans as well as people who have never heard the band. You won't be disappointed.
