Movie Reviews of PopeyeMovie Review: to The Curmudgeon Summary: 5 Stars
If you fancy yourself as a comic aficionado, you would know (which you obviously don't) that in the original comic strips of Popeye, he did in fact hate Spinach. It wasn't until the cartoons were made that he liked it. And no, I don't like comic books, and I don't read them, but I do know that.
I remember this movie growing up. I loved it! it played constantly on HBO. I just remembered it the other day when i was talking to my son. He's never seen it, and I'm in the process of buying it now on DVD so he can enjoy it. It's kids film, not movie masterpiece, but i guarentee that it is better than any kids movie they've been putting out in recent years. And the clarity of the film is timeless. Makes you feel like your out there on the ocean.
Loved it, and if you have kids, I'm sure they'd love it too.
Movie Review: Your Kids Will LOVE It! Summary: 5 Stars
I was always a fan of classic cartoons, and Popeye was always one of my favorite characters. I looked forward to seeing this movie when it first hit the theaters over 20 years ago and was a bit thrown off when I first saw it. I was expecting a movie adaptation of the typical cartoon stylings. What you get instead is a wonderful family oriented musical that kids can watch over and over without looking over their shoulders. The music and the scenery are worth the price of the DVD alone. While most of my praises are based upon the reaction of children, it still holds up for adults just as well, however, for those looking for typical a Popeye storyline... this may not be for you because you'll be so distracted by all the Popeye references that are NOT in the movie that you may not notice all the original stuff that IS in it.
Movie Review: "He neeeeds me, He neeeeds me....I yam what I yam"...yay!! Summary: 5 Stars
This film is fun. When I was younger, I used to catch this one summer on HBO when they were playing it continuously. But, somehow although I fought hard not to like it and to say that it was rubbish, I could not.It was and is a fun film. I love the songs. In fact, not since 'Mary Poppins' and 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' have little ditties from a movie stayed in my mind by using one of the songs. Just the other day, I was watching 'Punch-Drunk Love' (another film recommended), and to my surprise it was not just I who had remembered the little songs when I was younger. P. T. Anderson has given tribute to this fun movie in his film as well. Robert Altman has made better pictures ('The Player' and 'MASH') but who is comparing? He made this for fun (or perhaps some extra cash), but who cares? It is a fun film. Enjoy.
Movie Review: There's nothing ordinary about "Popeye" Summary: 5 Stars
If you don't like this movie, then that's your opinion. I think you are wrong, and are probably a victim of watching too many typical movies. "Popeye" is not typical. It is watchable, and enjoyable. The lyrics and music are ingenious and charming. The characterizations of Popeye and Olive make them somewhat eccentric, but they are very true to the cartoons. And the sets and costumes! There is so much to see and appreciate in every shot that the production design reminds me of Jacques Tati.
So if you didn't like it, perhaps you are happy with the comedy of Adam Sandler. But I automatically deduct about 50 points from your probable IQ when I read some of the grammatical and spelling errors in your review.
Movie Review: Well Blow Me Down! Summary: 5 Stars
Like some others I didn't fully appreciate this film the first time I saw it. Thanks to home video I was able to watch it again. I was confused by the fact that Popeye was made into a musical. But after seeing it again years later my confusion has vanished. What an excellent film & story! A huge thanks go out to Robin Williams & Shelley Duvall. I can't think of two other actors who could bring these characters to life any more perfectly! The characters of Bluto Poopdeck Pappy Wimpy Swee'Pea Sea Hag & all the rest are perfectly visualized here as well. I don't know why Robin Williams is ashamed of this role today. Oh well I'm glad Popeye is out on dvd for us to enjoy over & over again!
