Movie Reviews of Pope John Paul II

Movie Review: A unexpected surprise!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am writing about a movie I watched called Pope John Paul II which is based on a powerful true portrayal of our beloved Pope. It stars John Voight, who could be his twin and an outstanding actor as the younger Pope, Gary Elwes. I never pay attention on buses to the movie, but this one got my attention because of how human and real it was made. When I returned I looked it up to buy. I personally feel the best deals are with Amazon. So I ordered it. Within about 3-4 days it arrived. My husband was away and so I waited for his return to watch it. When he came home I told him how great it was and that their wasn't a sound on the bus. But at the end of the movie it began to stop and go again. I called Amazon to ask what they thought. I received an outstanding man on the other end of the phone, who asked me if I had tried it on another DVD. I said no, but would do so and get back to him. He said if there is any trouble, call us back and we will send you another. However, if it is your machine that there would be nothing they could do. That is totally understandable. But what impressed me the most, is that this wonderful company believed me. So if you are dishonest, they still believe their customers not to be. This type of business is like dinosaurs, it no longer exists. Thank you for your kindness, and for this man Jason who took my call. I highly recommend you buy this film. It is so real, you will forget about everything and watch in amazement. I laughed, cried and felt so good in the end. Not only for the movie, but for Amazon and it's help. Thank you, Barbara Buono

Movie Review: Meeting an abyss of hate with an abyss of love
Summary: 5 Stars

Jon Voight provides a moving portrayal of one of the most under-stated personalities of the late 20th century. As a young man facing the Nazi invasion of his homeland he expresses the theme of his life saying that such an abyss of hate can only be met with an equal abyss of love. Becoming a priest in defiance of the Nazi followed by Communist authorities, he planted the seeds that would lead that country to freedom once again. As Pope he stood up for what was right and encouraged non-violent resistance as the tool of revolution. His homilies on the what he called, "the theology of the body" gave the logical and inspiring defense of human sexuality based on dignity and respect for human life. A man unimpressed with the difficulty of the cause so long as the cause was just and the methods of fighting for it did not contradict the dignity of mankind, his impact on the world will ripple out to the centuries that follow. He was a hero worthy of imitation and veneration. This portrayal is a good start at carrying on that message.

Movie Review: Pope John Paul II
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a beautiful story even if you are not a Catholic. Very uplifting. John Voight was so believable as Pope John Paul. This was one of his best performances especially since there was so much available about the Pope through the years. He had his mannerisms down perfectly. The young Karol played by Cary Elewes was also very believable. He gave the sense of how angry one can become and yet he tried not to harm anyone. Not an easy task for a young person caught in those awful times.
My only problem was...no English subtitles which I did not know when I made the purchase. It would have helped.
I think movies should state when there are no subtitles.

Movie Review: A Wonderful Portrayal of a World Leader
Summary: 5 Stars

In all respects, acting, adherence to the historical record, and presentation of the faith of the Catholic Church, this is a marvelous movie that will become a classic, for Catholics and non Catholics alike.

This story of the humble man, who played such a major role in world affairs throughout his life, is unique in its study of the power a life lived according to faith, truth and love can exert to change the world for the better.

Movie Review: Pope John Paul II
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a powerful, moving movie about the man who touched people near and far throughout his life in the many roles he played-adolescent, seminarian, priest, Bishop and later, Pope. Cary Elwes and Jon Voight bring Pope John Paul II to life in stunning, loving and respectful portrayals of him throughout his years. It's like a living history book with the primary message of good trumping evil despite the difficulties presented. This movie is well worth watching!!!
