Movie Reviews of PollyannaMovie Review: A wonderful version. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great version of Pollyanna, and we were thoroughly surprised by how calm and tranquil this film was. We had no clue
what to think of it, at first, and thought we would give it a try. We have seen it many times. We like it as much as our
daughter does.
This one is a treat; the girl here is just right. The entire film is done nicely. Pollyanna, by Eleanor Porter, was treated
very well in this version. Really, the English accents, to us, does not matter at all. In truth, people in this country came
from various countries to begin with, so this is very insignificant. In light of how it ended on the screen is the main,
uppermost concern to us - in this case, happened to be wonderful. After you are travelling along with Pollyanna for a while,
seeing the things she sees; knowing that she has lost both parents, and is trying to make the better of her situation, the
little things are gone. What is left is a nicely done film.
She is a girl with the ability to capture the interest and hearts of the village. She longs to play this game of hers with her
aunt, whom has taken her into her home probably as duty - then her heart changes towards the last. Very sweet little girl, one
of which has qualities that everyone could learn a lesson from - kindness to all people, even those that are bitter. If more
people were like Pollyanna, living the golden-rule as she did, this world would be a better place to live in. She could've
been rude to her aunt Polly on different occasions, but she was kind to her regardless. She did not repay ill for ill,
contrarywise good. The period clothing and such is great. We think this version honours Eleanor Porter very well. Great for
everyone to see - youth or aged alike. We are not sorry we ordered it. Recommend it highly.
Movie Review: Remake far surpasses the original Summary: 5 Stars
This film is a must-see and a wonderful treat for the whole family. My kids asked me to check it out from the library and after we watched it together as a whole family, I bought a copy from Amazon to add to our collection of family films. It's rare that a remake would outshine the original, but this one is in a class by itself and leaves the 1960 version in the dust. The casting and writing were superb; this film remains true to the book, which I appreciate. (I cannot tell you how annoying it is when filmmakers second-guess the classics and compromise the story in order to make it more "appealing.")
Amanda Burton did right by author Eleanor H. Porter in her interpretation of Aunt Polly. It would be so easy for an actress to make this a mere two-dimensional character, but Burton thoroughly masters this role. Georgina Terry is a wonderful Pollyanna. She is a relatively new to the film industry and she does have a few bad acting habits onscreen here and there that I noticed, but she was such a lovable Pollyanna that the shortcomings really don't matter.
As a mom I can wholly recommend this film to add to your family's home library. If you want your children to enjoy a film that embraces Christianity, upholds the sanctity of marriage, and tickles your eyes with sweet glimpses of English country living, then this DVD would probably be the best 18 bucks you've spent in a long time.
Movie Review: First Rate! Summary: 5 Stars
A giving, young girl brings warmth and cheer to older people, who had lost all joy. And so she visits you.
I had seen the Disney version first, and liked it at 4-stars. This is a completely different movie, though the same story. The Disney is more entertainment. This film is a warm, uplifting, friend coming to visit you. More depth. Moving. Beautiful English country homes, within a beautiful countryside. Some subtle humor. A pleasant film of encouragement.
Well-made period films are: "Pride & Prejudice 1940, 1996, 2006", "Wives & Daughters", "North & South", Disneys' "Summer Magic", and "Naughty Marietta 1935 with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy". Fairly made is "Under the Greenwood Tree". Excellent period series is "Road to Avonlea seasons 1-6", and "Christy the Complete Series".
Movie Review: On The Mark Summary: 5 Stars
Having read the book by Eleanor H. Porter, I must say that this rendition of Pollyanna was On The Mark! The characters were just as described in the book. Georgina Terry IS Pollyanna. Her look, aura & her expressions were 100% Pollyanna. No finer choice could have been made. Aunt Polly was just as spectacular..Pendleton, Dr Chilton, Nancy, Mrs. Snow, Tom... The list goes on and on. Great character portrayal. Great casting..
That was the just the 1/2 of it. The storyline was also very accurate to the book. Actually, this movie had a more splendid ending with Aunt Polly getting married to Dr Chilton in the church, Mr Pendleton "giving Aunt Polly" to Dr. Chilton with an emotionally overcoming presence of a recovering Pollyanna. I have to admit, it had me in tears. It was wonderful. I could watch this again & again. Totally feel good.
Movie Review: "Glad" I purchased this Summary: 5 Stars
I recently watched the Masterpiece Theater version of Pollyanna. I have seen the Disney/Haley Mills version which is cute, but will give you a toothache. I wasn't sure what to expect because the story itself is very sweet, so it's not like it's going to vary from that too much. The Masterpiece Theater version is very good! The little girl who plays Pollyanna is exceptional. The costuming is wonderful, and the script is great (there are several laugh out loud moments). This version of Pollyanna is a fun production that you can enjoy without making you want to lapse into a coma from the sugary sweetness of it all.
