Movie Review: Too bad Pokémon got such a bad rap...because this is good! Summary: 4 Stars
I'm rather convinced that most of the press reviewers who claimed to have seen this movie didn't. Had they, they would've found that the Pokémon franchise is maturing both in terms of plot and quality. This fifth movie is a good demonstration of this, and does NOT deserve to be slapped around as was, say, the translated (read: butchered) version of the first movie. The plot here concerns Latias and Latios, the guardian Pokémon of the city of Altomere, and what happens when Team Rocket's pro thieves, Annie and Oakley, decide to steal the Soul Dew gem, which they use to power an ancient weapon which nearly destroys the city. As such, this isn't anywhere as simplistic as one encounters in the TV anime, nor in the first film (or rather, the English version, which as I said is pretty botched). There's a dark undertone to much of the film, although this is nicely balanced with some very nice and calmer moments, giving the film an ebb and flow that wasn't as apparent in prior Pokémon movies. Kunihiko Yuyama also drops in a few little nods to Italian film, ie: Fellini, etc with his 'camera' work...not surprising, since he and a crew spent time in Venice sourcing locations and the film's 'look'. It's not perfect, though...and the imperfections all come in thanks to, yep, 4Kids. First up, there WAS a wonderful storybook-style setup for the whole film in the original. They cut it save for the last little bit. Some of the dialogue...although, I will note, they're getting better at leaving things more alone than they did early on...is kind of hokey and lame, and didn't appear to be as such in the original. Lastly, they need to learn to leave the color balance alone, as the original was not as 'candy-colored' as this was, and I and others who've seen it actually prefer the more muted and realistic look; I guess they think that kids are too stupid to watch anything that doesn't approach day-glo levels as far as attention-mongering chroma work. But at least the original soundtrack was used completely, and there were NO lame boy-band tracks slathered all over this...I guess they learned their lesson after "Mewtwo Strikes Back"! So...almost perfect. Almost. When 4Kids finally gets past their cultural superiority trip and realizes that, yes, American kids ARE able to handle anime that's been translated pretty much literally, maybe we'll get the first perfect one. Until then, though, this is a pretty good shot. BTW, one plus here for the anime DIY set: complete digital component breakdown clips! See how Yuyama and his team put it all together. Nifty!
Movie Review: Bearable if not Decently Surprising Summary: 4 Stars
Truth be told, I have fallen out of Pokemon. It was so cool years ago, then it was same old boring same old. This movie was a complete twist on my part. I liked the mixing of CG and cartoon animation, which was very well done. The characters were all very clear and, well... colorful. Of course you have your basic cheesy blunt pokemon character designs, and some of the voices were annoying. But overall, the movie is at least bearable. Even for those of you looking for an excuse to deny it. It actually touched a little more on emotions than I expected. Thanks to little funny offsets like Team Rocket, parents can endure this one. This movie was really cool, a lot better than what I was expecting. The music fits the movie well, and sound effects were pretty good. But again, some of the lines of dialogue thrown in were pretty cheesy and obvious. spoiler- near the end of the movie the big machine thingy fell apart, and the bad guy goes, "it fell apart, I wonder why"- bluntly as if we didn't notice it ourselves. That made me wonder if they should have spent a little more time with dialogue. Overall, this was a fun little chase-filled movie that was at least worth sitting through, and I personally liked it.
Movie Review: The Pokemon are Back for their Final Theatrical Voyage Summary: 4 Stars
This part 6/10. "Pokemon Heroes" really stuck with me after I watched it. It also has a great rewatchable factor. I do think the obvious reference to Annie Oakley was corny though. Who would ever name their daughter Oakley? Latias and Latios are interesting. I like having two main characters with this one. The connection between the two made this a great watch. The likelihood to Venice was great. I loved watching the race through Alto Mare at the beginning. Definitely a good comeback for Pokemon.
Movie Review: My favorite Pokemon movie! Fantastic! Summary: 4 Stars
This was an AWESOME movie! Pokemon just keeps getting better and better! I loooved it! The graphics were beautiful. It was great! I just have 2 complaints. That why I rated it only 4 stars!1. I did NOT like Camp Pikachu. :( It's CAMP, not a farm! Lol. It disappointed me. However, the movie changed my mood. :) 2. I didn't like Latios and Latias's voice. My mom agreed with me. It's cute, but sounds like screaming. It gets VERY annoying after awhile!
