Movie Reviews of Pocketful of Miracles

Movie Review: Christmas on Broadway
Summary: 5 Stars

Dave the Dude (Glenn Ford) is a fast-talking Broadway bootlegger with a great sense of style, a murdered partner, a nightclub that's in hock to its rafters, and, unexpectedly, his partner's daughter Elizabeth (Hope Lange), nicknamed Queenie by her dad, who's resolved to pay off the man's debts to both Dave and the Mob. Apple Annie (Bette Davis) is the gin-guzzling grande dame of Broadway's panhandlers, whose apples Dave believes bring him luck. For Dave, as his sidekick Joyboy (Peter Falk in a role that deservedly won him the Best Supporting Oscar) observes, "it was the lucky apple that brought Queenie into his life" and enables him to reopen the club, turn it into a smash success, and become, within two years, a leading contender for New York's boss in the new syndicate being assembled by gangster Steve Darcey (Sheldon Leonard). Then fate lowers its boom. Annie's daughter Louise (Ann-Margret), who has been raised in a convent in Spain ever since infancy, has fallen in love with Carlos Romero (Peter Mann), the son of a count (Arthur O'Connell), and the Romeros want to meet her family. But Annie has led Louise to believe that she's a wealthy dowager and a member of the Four Hundred! Only Dave has the brains and the clout to help her out of her jam--and, as he observes, if Annie's apples really are lucky for him and he doesn't come to her aid, "how long do you think our luck would last?" With the willing assistance of the larcenous and bombastic pool-shark Judge Henry G. Blake (Thomas Mitchell) and the sentimental butler (Edward Everett Horton) of a best-selling playboy/novelist friend, he and Queenie install Annie in a high-end hotel suite and begin passing her off as a society queen. Meanwhile there's Darcey and the police to contend with as well. Ford displays a splendid mastery of comic timing and all the Runyonesque characters are unforgettable, especially Falk, Mitchell, and Mickey Shaughnessy as Dave's chuaffeur Junior. (Lange, who was Ford's girlfriend at the time and was more or less forced on the producer as a condition of his participation, is perhaps just a little bit implausible as the Maryland cafeteria cashier turned nightclub star who falls in love with Dave, but the fact that Queenie "never really wanted this to begin with" and would prefer to move back to her girlhood home, marry her man and have a "flock of children" makes up in some part for the minor miscasting.) This remake of Capra's earlier Lady for a Day has been among my all-time favorite movies for decades and makes a delightful family comedy that can be appreciated by anyone from 10 to 110.
