Movie Reviews of Play it Again, SamMovie Review: Woody Allen at his Funniest Best Summary: 5 Stars
This is just about Woody Allen's funniest film, but the story that unfolds of Allen looking for love (or at least sex) after a divorce is ultimately touching, making the film much more than just another comedy. Being divorced myself, I could certainly relate to the character in this movie.
One of the funniest scenes is where Allen has been invited to a woman's apartment where she keeps telling him that she is a nymphomaniac and that she just wants sex from as many men as possible. He then jumps on her but she screams and violently pushes him off. After he walks away from her apartment he says: "I don't know what I did wrong. She was saying all the right words."
Movie Review: A Classic Summary: 5 Stars
A classic must have for any Woody Allen fan, especially fans of his early work. The movie cleverly incorporates Humphrey Bogart (indistinguishable from the real Bogart)as his character in 'Casablanca' (where this Woody Allen movie derives its title) tutoring an inept, timid Allen in the arts of wooing. The movie brilliantly incorporates Bogart and 'Casablanca' into the script, including key quotes and even ending with the same final scene. A Woody Allen masterpiece.SleeperAnnie Hall
Movie Review: Allen's Most Cohesive Work Summary: 5 Stars
Simply put, Woody Allen hit his stride in this 1972 comic classic. The scenes of Allen getting coaching from Boggy, as he makes feeble attempts to win over Keaton are priceless. "Tell her she moves something deep down inside of you"...."I can't say that"..."Tell her!!!" Brilliantly directed by Herbert Ross, (not Allen, as most believe) this is not only the most consistant of Allen's early films, it is far and away his funniest. What's best about owning this DVD is you can "play it again" over and over...Enjoy!
Movie Review: CHECK OUT THIS WOODY! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are not sure if you will like a "Woody Allen" movie, I suggest you start with this one. It is one of his more straight forward films and it is funny! I am a fan,but I must admit that I like his earlier films (Play it again Sam,Banana's,Take the Money and Run,Sleeper,Manhattan,Annie Hall). There are some really funny scenes in this one. The scene where he is introduced to a blind date at his apartment is hilarious! The DVD transfer looks good, but the treatment could be better.
Movie Review: Woody's Best But Where's The Extras? Summary: 5 Stars
A comedy masterpiece with all of the traditional Woody elements: slapstick gags, supernatural moments, neurotic career-woman heroine, oblivious husband, great locations, classic dialouge. BUT - why did PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO not include the 1972 15 minute "Making of Play It Again Sam" featurette and the 1972 promotional radio show on the DVD?. Let's hope PHV will release a special 30th anniverasry edition with these items next year.
