Movie Reviews of Play Misty for Me

Movie Review: "An Engrossing Thriller!"
Summary: 5 Stars

Jessica Walter has always been one of my favorite actresess, and after years of seeing her in primetime soaps, situations comedies, and endless TV movies, I finally saw her in "Play Misty For Me", which was Clint Eastwood's directorial debut. Walter's plays a deranged woman who sleeps with Eastwood one night, and in her mind forges a love affair. After being rejected by the Eastwood character, we see Walter's portrayal of a clear psychotic that should have garnered her an Oscar nomination. What makes matter's worse is when Donna Mills enters the picture as Eastwood's girlfriend, standing in the way of the killer's revenge. The plot moves by fast and there are some amazing surprises. I was really shocked how good this film is, as I am not really a movie fan of early '70's cinema. "Play Misty For Me" also served as the springboard for the 1987 film "Fatal Attraction", starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close, and I have often wondered if Close watched Walter's role in this movie; both are virtuoso perfromances, and in the hands of inexperienced actresses, both roles would have fallen to the wayside.
This DVD also contains a great documentary, featuring interviews with Eastwood, Walters and Mills, who discusses how she quit her daytime serial, "Love is a Many Splendored Thing", on a Friday, and by Monday morning, was on the "Misty" set working with Eastwood. Without a doubt a 5 star film. I also highly suggest "Fatal Atrraction", the movie of the 1980's that made the cover of "Time" magazine, and had everyone talking.

Movie Review: Not to be watched after 3:00 in the afternoon.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is just my opinion as if you watch it too close to bedtime it'll scare the living daylights out of you. That one scene where Clint is asleep, and then it seems as though he's dreaming about Jessica standing over him, and it's all still, but then she lunges forth with a knife, and blood curdling scream wakes him back into reality. This scene alone should've won the film an oscar for best picture as it's one of the all time scariest scenes in movie history. Clint plays a local dj who can't seem to keep his hormones under control, and is romanticizing 2 women at the same time, but the character played by Jessica Walter is taking it very seriously, so when Clint wants Donna Mills only Jessica doesn't seem to get the message, and anyone who gets in her way it would be better for them to commit suicide. The moods in this movie are rather dark as the lighting, and use of color reveal itself here. The music also shows a rather dark side as well. Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a love song, but it's just brought out in a dark light here. There's also the instrumental piece where Clint tries to rescue Donna from Jessica...is it Manavotti? If it is then this should've won a grammy and an oscar. This is Clint's first directing job on a movie, and he does a rather splendid performance here. As I said don't watch too close to bedtime.

Movie Review: jessica walter rocks the house!
Summary: 5 Stars

the main reason why this film ranks so high in my book is jessica walter.

her performance set the mark that would be hit by glenn close, rebecca de mornay, lynn whitfield and many other actresses. but it would never be surpassed. her portrait of evelyn is a chilling, unflinching trip in to a very sick mind. she also manages to infuse her work with this dark, at times knavish, humor that makes her performance so watchable time after time. in fact, i am watching her about to get killed now on the sleuth channel.

there are many aspects of this film that are hip, such as the maid played by clarice taylor. she's so funny! and the roommate madeleine has a black boyfriend that is a jazz afficionado. the soundtrack is a huge highlight.

but donna mills is so pallid as the love interest. and the tone it takes towards gay people is pretty shocking but sadly, not out of date. that friend on 'sex and the city' for example? does darren star really think he's doing gay men a favor by having that character in that show?

but eastwood, considering it's his debut as a director, does a pretty good job with the script and working with surtees to lens some gorgeous shots of the carmel area and the california coastline.

and, he gave irene hervey a great little cameo to boot! so it's all good.

Movie Review: Stylish thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

Clint Eastwood stars as radio disc jockey Dave who has an obsessed fan named Evelyn (Jessica Walter). She calls the station every night and asks Dave to "play 'Misty' for me." They meet and have a one-night stand, and then Dave is ready to return to his old girlfriend, Tobie (Donna Mills). Evelyn has other plans, however. Obsessed with Dave, she begins stalking and threatening him.

"Misty" was quite a unique thriller back in 1971 (It was the inspiration for the movie Fatal Attraction) and is still effective today. The story is believable, intense, and fast-paced, with a few very violent moments that are guaranteed to make you jump. Walter is outstanding as the deranged woman, Eastwood is convincing as the sexy DJ, and Mills does a good job as his romantic interest. The movie was filmed in lovely Carmel with its secluded beaches and crashing surf, and features the song, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."

This was the first film that Eastwood directed and it is really good. The DVD has some very interesting commentaries by the three stars. I recommend it to those who like romantic thrillers with mature stars, a compelling script, and lots of creepy atmosphere.

Movie Review: Very Well Done Suspenseful Movie.
Summary: 5 Stars

Here's a rather well done Clint Eastwood movie. My wife and I watched it last night. We'd been watching the Dirty Harry and Western Series DVDs and, boy, does this represent a change! Eastwood here plays a nighttime disc jockey operating out of Carmel, California. It's a beautiful setting and the photography is marvelous. In any case, he gets requests to "Play Misty for Me" and he complies. Ultimately the sultry and good looking woman tracks him down, and they begin an affair at just about the same time as Eastwood and another past flame are gradually getting back together. It's a bit complicated, but that adds to the story.

The "Play Misty" woman gradually evolves into something of a friendly stalker and then grows into an increasingly unwanted pest who is very hard to get rid of. Alas, it reminded me of my past 50-year history as a bachelor. The stalker becomes more and more of a nut case and begins to interfere with the DJ's life in dramatic fashions. It's an erie tale and filled with a good deal of suspense and the deaths of several people. It's a bit of a nail biter, if you like that sort of thing. It will grab your attention and hold it, that's for certain. Very well done movie. Very well worth watching, if you can take the tension.
