Movie Reviews of Play Misty for MeMovie Review: Dated Terror Thriller - Summary: 2 Stars
Play Misty for Me" is a good thriller, but definitely dated and felt like a spin-off of psycho. You definitely notice the era's style. Clint Eastwood's "big hair" at the time rivaled his romantic interests and the clothes he wore were disco material. It was the first film he directed, made in 1971, and definitely shows his ability to build tension and terror.
Clint plays a handsome, purring voice radio disc jockey "Dave" who lives high on the cliffs of the beautiful California Pacific Coast. We see him driving in his sports car to work and the local bar. He gets persistent calls from a female to "Play Misty for me," but he soon realizes she has a plan to suffocate him with her ownership of him and everything he does. For some reason after many obvious signs she is crazy, he keeps catering to her instead of getting a restraining order. Most level-headed men would not put up with her histrionics and inappropriate acts, but to make the story fly we have to suffer through several embarrassing scenes and tormented rages. She wants him all to herself and won't let anyone stand in the way - Dirty Harry would have taken care of this in a nanosecond.
The movie was interesting, but since there have been so many similar stories out there, you end up watching retro 1970's kitsch instead.
