Movie Reviews of Platoon (Special Edition)

Movie Review: A Movie Everyone Should See
Summary: 5 Stars

I never saw this movie until I got the DVD. Alot of my friends saw this movie and alot of my relatives who were in the war kept telling me to see it. I am a history fanatic especially wars. I find a reat appeal to them. Not because of the deaths but because of the changes the envoke. Platoon a movie written by a man who lived through vietnam. A man who sat every night in mud and dirt wondering if he was gonna live till tomorrow. It has a prefect balance of blood and story. It shows how the mentality of men was changed by the time spent in the jungle. From the moment the movie starts and you see Charlie Sheen come off the plane to the dead bodies being loaded on. To the moment you see William Dafoe being gun down to the moment Charlie leaves the modd is set and you are taken to the time of waar as seen through the eyes of a soldier. This movie is a must for everyone so we may learn from the experience and it not happen again. A Movie well worth the Academy Awards it got and all the praise from movie goers and Veterans alike

Movie Review: A Fantastic Slice of Grim Americana
Summary: 5 Stars

Oliver Stone's "Platoon" will forever have a spot in my holy grail of cherished DVD's. This is an outstanding look at the horrors of the Vietnam War. The classic good vs. evil struggle between Willem Dafoe's "Elias" and Tom Berenger's "Sgt. Barnes" is legendary. Charlie Sheen exhibits perhaps his best work with a very human, realistic performance as the guy who actually volunteered to carry a machine gun in the Mekong Delta, totally unaware of the hell he was about to enter.

Its tough to watch parts of the movie, but it is really a great film. Keith David, and Forest Whitaker deliver excellent performances as black soldiers struggling with their enemies in the jungle and in their own company.

The film has a terrific soundtrack that compliments the direction of Stone who was at his peak during the making of the film. This was before he made the repulsive Natural Born Killers. Platoon is one of the best (if not THE best) films of the 1980's.

Movie Review: 4.5 out of 5
Summary: 5 Stars

PLATOON is one of the greatest and most moving war films you will ever see. It made writer/director Oliver Stone a legend, and remains his greatest film, in my opinion. Charlie Sheen stars as Chris Taylor, a new war recruit assigned to Vietnam, who finds friendship in the form of Sgt. Elias Grodin (Willem Dafoe, just two years before his role in Stone's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST), while dealing with the ruthless Sgt. Barnes (Tom Berenger, in one of his best roles). The film, which took in four Academy Awards including "Best Picture", is frighteningly realistic, partly due to the fact that it is based on Stone's first-hand experience in Vietnam. Stone's directing is awesome; his script will keep you hooked, if you can take the drama. Sheen is great, and the theme, "Adagio for Strings", is so perfect for the film you'll never forget it. There are few films which can make the horrors of war as depicted in Oliver Stone's masterpiece...PLATOON.

Movie Review: Get the Special Edition, NOT the Regular Edition
Summary: 5 Stars

When they reissued Platoon on DVD, I was excited. I wasn't excited when I noticed there were no special features on the DVD. This Special Edition has all those features that every DVD should have.

As most of you already know, Platoon is a great movie depicting a very honest and brutal look at the Vietname War. The acting by Dafoe, Berenger, and Sheen is probably the best of their careers. The directing by Stone is a high point as well for him. The movie is as intense as they come. View the village scene and you'll see why.

The special features are good complements to the movie. The commentary by Stone and Capt. Dye is fitting and informative. The documentary as well provides some great insight, and it doesn't ramble on about unimportant facts. Overall, it's a pretty decent set of bonuses.

Once again this Special Edition DVD gets 4 1/2 - 5 stars. The regular edition gets 4 due to the lack of offerings. Get the Special Edition and don't miss out!

Movie Review: OLIVER'S REGIMENT
Summary: 5 Stars

Oliver Stone has never been accused of being boring, at least to my recollection. In "Platoon" Stone has apparently crafted not only the definitive war movie of his generatiom, but also one of Hollywood's best films ever. I say "apparently" deliberately, knowing that non-combatants can never appreciate the full horror of warfare. Try telling the late Helen Keller how tough it must have been to be blind and deaf. You get the picture. Stone's movie literally explodes across the screen, with little time given to actor definition. Oh sure, Berenger and Dafoe stand out, but certainly not in the fashion of grabbing the limelight. War is a team effort, for better or worse, and one is drawn to the conclusion that the enemy is not always across the firing lines, one of Norman Mailer's themes in "The Naked and the Dead", circa 1950. In summary, one is definitely not entertained by this film. Perhaps, it's our animal instincts that keep drawing us back to it, sadly.
