Movie Reviews of Platoon (Special Edition)

Movie Review: The Nightmare of War
Summary: 5 Stars

I have watched Platoon more than any other war movie. So much so that I've had to give it a rest over the last few years.
Why is it so good?
Perhaps because it is the most realistic (certainly Vietnam) war movie ever made. Its based on Oliver Stones own experiences in Vietnam. Now I doubt whether there were actually two so clearly good and bad characters, as represented by Willem Dafoe and Tom Beringer in the film, but it is the spark between these two that creates much of the films atmosphere.
There are quite a few scenes in this film, such as when the Charlie Sheen character wakes up in the middle of the night (in the jungle), that are wonderfully done. You really get an idea of just how scary being a soldier might be.
I'm also sure that the film would not not have been as successful as it was, without its marvellous soundtrack. Most noteably Samuel Barbers 'Adagio for Strings'. This piece of music alone adds an extra dimension to the scenes it is used in. A very haunting and sad piece of music.
The ending of the film is perhaps the only weak point, but it is a minor quibble about a very powerful and moving film.

Movie Review: lol
Summary: 5 Stars

Platoon, it records a story in the Vietnam War. Chris Taylor a young American soldier who is the main character of the movie, had arrived South Vietnam with his comrades. In the battlefield, it shows audiences a real battle life. Although the condition in the battlefront was bad, Taylor learned to fit in battle life, and he became an experienced soldier on the battlefront. In the scene when Taylor's leader Elias Grodin was killed by Viet soldiers, Taylor figured out Robert Barnes was the real murderer of Elias, and this scene is the cover of this movie. As the movie moves on, Taylor continued to fight with Viet soldiers and once, Taylor's company was losing because of the huge number of enemies. After bombing on the whole area, most of the soldiers died. Taylor was one of the survivals, and he found Barnes in the jungle. In the anger, he killed Barnes as what Barnes did to Elias. By the way, the newer version of Platoon has a better effect on the movie, even though it's still the same one. This movie is very compelling; it'll bring you to the world of war, a cruel, brutal and apathetic world. Again, welcome to the world of war!

Movie Review: get the point
Summary: 5 Stars

platoon is definitely a great movie! realize, however, that it's not meant to depict the reality of the u.s. war in vietnam (although it does do this to an extent) as much as it's meant to show the universal human battle between good and evil. what better than a war backdrop affords this opportunity?! a soldier in war has many many chances to act good or evil. sometimes the line is BLURRED. listen to what charlie sheen's character has to say about this dichotomy as he talks of the differences between barnes and elias (particularly the bit about "possession of my soul")...and how he himself, at different times, is pulled in both their directions. and note the ending! charlie picks one over the other.

for what it's worth, seeing how few people have the time to sit down and read lengthy books nowadays, i believe platoon will supplant literary works like moby dick as the premiere dramatic delving into the human struggle between good and evil. the movie is so palpable, so visually and emotionally rich that it's hard to stop thinking about it after it ends. maybe that's the point. good job, oliver!

Movie Review: Easily Stone's Best, Hard Hitting
Summary: 5 Stars

This film sums up hard hitting. It's emotional, and manages to maintain it's touching credibility throughout, even with the blockbuster battle at the end. Tom Berenger as the twisted CO is superb, and in my opinion his best role. Willem Defoe is shortlived but stellar, he brings the emotional side, an angle Platoon could not survive without. And of course Sheen, matching his father for being in a Vietnam film (Apocalypse Now) and does a great job.

The plot is based on a small platoon of men trying to survive during the Vietnam war. Straight forward but executed to perfection. Don't expect it to be cushy either, there are a few harrowing scenes, definately not a film for the faint hearted. It simply hits hard, and with a fantastic score (mostly Barber's Adagio For Strings, or Agmus Dei) that really emphasizes the emotions.

The best and most realistic war film I have seen, above Apocalypse Now. I don't care for the people who say Stone made lots of it up, of course he did. But your telling me everything was sweet and sound during the war?

Movie Review: A masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Possibly the most authentic Hollywood film to ever display the horrors of the Vietnam war, Oliver Stone's Platoon is a haunting, violent masterpiece that never lets go of the viewer from beginning to end. Based more or less on Stone's own personal experiences as a soldier in Vietnam, the majority of the film is told from the point of view of young Chris (Charlie Sheen) as he finds his loyalties tested between his two commanding officers (Tom Berenger and Willam Dafoe). Sergeant Elias (Dafoe), a frequent pot smoker, cares for his men. The battle scarred Sergeant Barnes (Berenger) proves to harbor a dark side that it manifested by alcoholism. The ensemble cast (which includes Keith David, Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker, John C. McGinley, Kevin Dillon, Tony Todd, and Stone himself) is more than memorable, and there are plenty of scenes that are both haunting and unforgettable. Stone would deservingly win Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, while Dafoe walked away with a much deserved Best Supporting Actor nomination.
