Movie Reviews of Platoon (Special Edition)

Movie Review: 'Nam '86...
Summary: 5 Stars

Back whenever (I don't remember) I saw a "coming up next" bar on AMC stating that "Platoon" was about to play. However I was a moron back then listening to Green Day so I figured I should play on the computer and listen to bad music. Kids are pretty dumb, I was one, we were all one.

Anyways this movie, like all really good Vietnam films, really took some time to take in. Everyone plays there part in this, a small story in a larger depressing one. I could go on to each persons plot and character, but that would mediocorize (not a word) the other reviewers who displayed the characters.

This is one hell of an engaging film, full of everything you could find in a divided war...injustice, hate, innocence, and revenge. Everything to make an interesting movie, well, here you have it. Does have some scenes that will, well, you won't like the looks of it. By the middle ATLEAST you will create some emotion towards this, as it is nearly as real as it comes.

From the first scenes of the bodies of fallen soldiers, past the heart-racing night ambush, through Elias' majestic...(I don't wanna ruin everything if you haven't seen it), all the way to the last, costly battle, a battle that will have you shaken at the horror.

Each character will stay with you to the end, unless they become a casualty along the way, you will miss them, even if you didn't care. This entire movie is a definite rent, and a great own. I watch it from time to time when it comes on tv, but is usually censored.

Charlie Sheen was perfect in this movie. Playing the caught-in-the-middle Chris who battles for proper glory but only finds that war isn't all about glory, it's about staying alive and making it back home.

Movie Review: A classic Vietnam movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Platoon remains the best movie ever made about the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. This movie shows it like it is with no apologies. It is not just a simple war movie with one side fighting the other, but instead warring factions between units. The story follows one platoon as they attempt to survive the war. The unit is divided in two groups and are led by two completely different men with completely different outlooks on life. Platoon is very effective in showing the horrors of war committed by both sides while also showing the terror and brutality of battle. This is not for the faint of heart but it is still an excellent movie.

The casting for Platoon could not have been any better than it is. Charlie Sheen plays Chris Taylor, the young private who volunteered for the army and the person who we see the movie through. Tom Berenger and Wilem Dafoe star as the opposing sergeants in the platoon. These two are the best performances in the whole movie. Dafoe's Sergeant Elias is a hippie soldier who cares for his men while Berenger's Sergeant Barnes is a die hard soldier who won't let anything stand in his way. The rest of the cast includes Keith David, Forest Whitaker, John C. McGinley, Dale Dye, Francesco Quinn, Kevin Dillon, Mark Moses, and Johnny Depp. Also the Adagio for Strings is the perfect music for this movie that helps to show the horror of the war and also the loss of innocence in the soldiers. The Special Edition DVD is very good with several commentaries, a documentary, theatrical trailers, a photo gallery and widescreen presentation included. This movie is well worth the price and should not be missed. One of the greatest war movies ever made, not just Vietnam!

Movie Review: A Great Film!! A Great DVD!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having never been to Vietnam, it is hard for me to say that this is the most accurate Vietnam film made. My cousin was in Vietnam and he described the place to me and it definitely sounds like the movie. I also have friends who have said this was a very accurate film. Oliver Stone's main objective in writing and directing this film was to show people what it really was like in Vietnam. He said in an interview that Hollywood had their idea of what Vietnam was like and it never was on cue, (the closest being "Apocolypse Now").

To create some of the realism, Stone had the cast and crew do some military training in the Phillipines, which is where the film was shot. Charlie Sheen is quoted as saying, "It was so tiring, and when we were done we thought we'd be given a catered meal, but we're given military meals-ready-to-eat instead. We slept in two man foxholes that we dug. Stone wanted to grab the feeling of exhaustion and confusion, and did it exceptionally by putting the cast through rigorous conditions. As you watch the movie, you might find yourself saying, "Man, they look tired." It's because they are.

Oliver Stone used several of his own experiences in Vietnam in this film, especially the scene where Charlie Sheen is so frustrated with the situation, he starts shooting his M-16 at the feet of a Vietnamese villager to make him dance. He also said that the drug use in Vietnam had never really been accurately portrayed in Hollywood.

Great actors, a great script, and a great director, Platoon is a great film, that was the big winner at the 1986 Academy Awards Ceremony. I recommend it highly.

Movie Review: Death? What do y'all know about death?
Summary: 5 Stars

Platoon is a gritty portrayal of a young man's introduction to war and Vietnam. This is definitely not an uplifting flag-waving film, but what would you expect from Oliver Stone? Very real, and surreal at times, Platoon unveils the tragedy, destruction and dehumanization of war. Sheen does a decent job, but it's Berenger and Dafoe that deserve all of the acting acclaim here. Just bubbling below the surface of over the top territory, Berenger and Dafoe unleashe fierce performances. Though Stone does showcase the terrible truths of war, he also portrays the camaraderie and bonds of the men trying to keep each other alive. The fighting scenes are violent and scary and impossible to turn away from. This is a very dark and gritty depiction of the Viet Nam war. Naturally, one must compare this movie to other 'Nam motion pictures. I still think Apocalypse Now was the best. Platoon is pretty much tied with Full Metal Jacket. Some viewers compared Platoon to Saving Private Ryan- no way. Ryan was an epic World War II film, where there was a clear definition of morality. Platoon focuses on the "greyness" of good and evil. There was no triumph at the end of the film. What were they fighting for anyway? I had a major problem with American soldiers killing each other, but that was probably the point of the film. It's a good movie to watch, but not the "end-all" war movie that some think it is. What I enjoyed most about Platoon is it tells the story how Vietnam (probably) was. It says there is no winner in a war. It's miserable for everybody. It breaks even the toughest people down emotionally and physically. I highly recommend it.

Movie Review: I screamed..Icursed..and I cried..
Summary: 5 Stars

Platoon is another war movie superior to Saving Pvt. Ryan and Black Hawk Down in every possilbe way. Of those 4 movies, I also find this one to be the most emotional. Even though they are all tragic movies, this one made my emotions jump out. Goo thing that I didn't see it at the theater because I probably would have gotten kicked out. I was cherring on some characters and screaming and cursing at others.
The movie is about Vietnam but it deals with it on an entirely different note. It deals with the amercians and some of the lousy, evil ones. I guess you could call Tom berenger a good actor because by the end of the movie, I WANTED TO KILL HIM! I was sobbing and couldn't help myself. It's a very emotional story about drugs, alcohol, violence, and treachery.
Charlie Sheen is a young private learning under 2 lieutenants played by Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger. Willem Dafoe is excellent as usal in another powerful role.
By the end of the movie, it's not even really about Vietnam, because this isn't a movie like Saving Pvt. Ryan where you see people shooting at each other. No. This time, this realistic movie shows americans when they weren't fighting...with the vietnamese. It shows the ugliness of some of them, the joy of others and the cruelty of someone caring more about his fame than the lives of his partners. Congratulations Tom Berenger, you must be a good actor because I wanted to strap dynamite to your
Gives Full Metal Jacket a run for its money and in the end, this is the BEST WAR MOVIE. Saving who? Platoon is the war movie to see. Forget the rest.
