Movie Reviews of Pink Floyd: The Wall (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)Movie Review: "Is there anybody out there...?" Summary: 5 Stars
Some have called this film a full-length music video. I suppose it could be a valid summary, but you could also argue that this is much like a rock opera told entirely from the point-of-view of the main character. "The Wall" tells the life story of a fictional rocker named Pink, (from his last name, Pinkerton) starting with his early childhood when his father was killed in World War II, going on through his young life and rise to stardom. Through his life there have been many "bricks in the wall," most especially the overnurturing attention from his mother, the cruelty of teachers, and the shallow treachery of his wife - all of which drive him more and more socially inward. Eventually Pink finds himself so isolated that he cuts himself off from his own fans and becomes the most bizarre alter ego in rock and roll history: a neo-nazi leader. The wall is complete - as one song says, "you cannot reach me now."
The idea this is a long music video probably stems from the fact images flash by underneath the music. However, there is a central storyline to the music and movie, and unlike other viewers I was never bored during my viewing of this. Alan Parker and all involved do an excellent job with visuals, particularly near the end of the movie. Some of the stronger images include young Pink and his father dressing in uniform simultaneously, the machinery of the "Another Brick In the Wall Part 2" sequence, and a fantastic shot of British soldiers marching off into a dusty sunset. However, my main props goes to Gerald Scarfe and his animation team. The one thing that made me go out and buy this DVD was "The Trial" sequence at the end of the film. If you like animation, see this movie - trust me, that sequence makes this entire film worth watching. It's a great song and Scarfe's animation (though he was modest about it in the commentary) perfectly captures what it is about.
The DVD has some fine features, not including the little poster that comes inside. There's a documentary on the making of the film, a music video for "Another Brick In the Wall Part 2," as well as commentary from Roger Waters and Gerald Scarfe. The latter was a great commentary to listen to, they explain a lot of the stories behind what happens in the movie, in particular those bits based off of Waters' own life. I gotta admit, though: my favorite part was when Waters and Scarfe do nothing but make fun of Bob Geldof for about five minutes. "Awe feck!" There is also a trailer, and I have to say whoever did the trailer gets points from me. The editing in that was exceptionally well done - the shot of the stuka bomber followed by the drop of blood was genius.
The more I see "The Wall" the more it grows on me. Maybe it's because it's lyrics really talk about something we all deal with - having emotions, having conflicts, and trying to deal with them. It's probably because I notice something striking in the filmmaking that I didn't notice before. Whatever the reason, "Pink Floyd The Wall" has become a cult classic over the decades, and if you're a fan of films like this, it's a definate purchase. A good DVD, and a good film.
