Movie Reviews of Pink Floyd - PulseMovie Review: Pity to those who fail to appreciate the greatness of this concert Summary: 5 Stars
"It's not out and you feel you can review it ?" Interesting comment from some reviewers who then rated the DVD with 1 star or so. It is contradictory, isn't it?
Of all the negative comments on this DVD, there is one thing that is in common. That they are all from die-hard Roger Waters fan. Pity that they let their emotions towards RW blind their judgement on any music from David Gilmour.
I discovered Pink Floyd at a very late stage. My first PF record was "The Division Bell" and I loved it so much that I went on to buy all the PF records. These days DB is still the one I love most. Pulse was the DB concert tour and it had a great mix of songs. The concert was awesome and I particular like the way DG smiled and exchanged glances with the band during the show. They enjoyed the music and the performance as they played the songs together. They certainly had a lot of fun and that was what it should be.
I have the VCDs for some time now and I couldn't wait for the DVD to come out. To all who like Roger Waters and hate David Gilmour, I would say give this DVD a chance. Watch the wonderful movie that Amazon provides and then honestly ask yourself if it isn't really good.
Movie Review: Worth the wait, as good as it was to see for the first time Summary: 5 Stars
It took Pink Floyd 10 years to put this out on DVD, but it was worth the wait. I own the original VHS, and the video quality on this is excellent, nicely enhanced from the original video tapes. The sound mixing is awsome coming through a 5.1 system The packaging is very slick, with a promo post-card for David Gilmore's solo album "on an island" and then a very intricate map of the menus of the DVD. Sure it is odd that they split up the concert onto 2 dvd's, but the continuity to the original 2 cd set is a neat concept, because they added bonus features to both discs to compliment them. Overall, the original concert footage is 145 minutes, the total runtime is about 4 hours of footage and Concert. Too bad they chose to shoot this in a 4:3 aspect instead of widescreen film when they did it orignially. Say Goodbye to Life as We know it is a neat feature, and the "Wish You Were Here" with Billy Corgan is also interesting. There are also promo videos for "take it back" and "learning to fly" tucked away on the discs, and a "bootlegging the bootleggers" section. Just a well done set of discs, and currently going at a great value from 12-16 dollars at different places. Get it while the getting is good.
Movie Review: VHS and Laserdisc! Summary: 5 Stars
This video was released on VHS and Laserdisc many years ago. I bought the Laserdisc version and found only one problem with it.
The show that I saw in Nashville at the Vanderbilt stadium (and all of the American shows) was different from this show. They did not perform "Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirity as they did at the performance on this video. The only reason I call this a problem is because I would have liked to have had a video of the show I saw. Other than that, this show is a must have for any and all Pink Floyd fans. And if David wanted to take a little extra time to make sure the DVD looked as good as it possibly could, all I can say to him is "Thank you for doing it right!"
To say that Pink Floyd is not as good without Roger Waters is ridiculous. Granted Pink Floyd is not the same without him, but they are still as good. Don't forget, Roger is the one who wrote "The Final Cut" which most Pink Floyd fans ignore. Roger may have wrote better lyrics, but David is the one who gives Pink Floyd their unique sound.
Maybe one day Roger and David will patch up their differences and give us one more album and tour before they hang it up for good.
Movie Review: Not quite what I expected... Summary: 5 Stars
Having been in love with the VHS version of things for the last 8 or so years since I've had it and waiting eagerly for the DVD version for quite some time now, I put in an order for Pulse in Amazon UK right the day it was released and received it after an interminable wait of 4 days. Popped it in my laptop, and...
I guess I was a wee bit disappointed. If you're like me and were expecting a frame-by-frame copy of your battered and faithful VHS, then sorry to say you're not gonna get it. I wonder why anybody would want to re-edit things when things are already perfect? But they've gone and done it and it will take some time for me to get used to the new version. I guess I will still treasure the "normal" version of things and not throw away my precious VHS copy!!
The DVD video quality is "clearly fuzzy" on my laptop where I watched it and understand Gilmour when he muses that it should've been shot on film. I guess it wouldn't be noticeable on a TV screen.
I haven't watched the whole DVD yet, so I cant comment on the extras or 5.1 sound or anything else and I cant commit the sacrilege of rating the show anything less than 5 stars for the re-edits!
Movie Review: Simply Stunning Summary: 5 Stars
As an old 60 year old, I had the pleasure of seeing Pink Floyd many years ago when they did their Dark Side and Wall tours. I remember being somewhat disappointed with their sound. It seemed like they were trying to replicate the albums and couldn't quite master it. Also, sound systems in large auditoriums could be a problem. The visuals were top notch however. I figured I'd never get to experience the total package of sound and visual but was grateful for having been a part of the show.
That all changed recently when I became aware of the Pulse DVD. I actually caught the last part of the performance on PBS television one night and in that short time was blown away with what I saw. I immediately ordered the DVD, powered up the home theater system and relived what I had missed from those live shows.
This performance is nothing short of incredible. It shows what newer technology, and seasoned musical geniuses can create. Pink Floyd has aged like a fine wine. Every track on this DVD is superb quality. The lighting, video, and music is the perfect combination.
Simply put, it's the greatest performance I have ever seem in my life. And I've seen many!
