Movie Reviews of Pink Floyd - PulseMovie Review: 5 stars for the PULSE DVD, but 0 stars for EMI Summary: 5 Stars
EMI has a new "official" release now set for Sept. 18th 2006. Don't be surprised if it is pushed into 2007. I don't know what on earch EMI is doing but this has been their pattern. From what I've read, THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF ANY MEMBER OF THE BAND OR MANANGEMENT!!! This is STRICTLY EMI's fault. So as far as the release date, I would take it with a grain of salt based on EMI's history of delay after delay, "official" release date after "official, confirmed" release dates. So EMI gets negative stars if that was possible.
That said, (if the DVD is ACTUALLY released this Sept.), the DVD gets 6 stars in my book, because I've watched several other live-in-concert videos, and this one is in a league of its own. (The PULSE VHS video was released in 1995). Even if you're not a big fan of the Band, you will be absolutely blown away by the lighting, lasers, and special effects. This is, in my honest opinion, the greatest live concert video by far. I've seen The Who, The Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, U2, and other incredible bands live, but PULSE is simply the best. I don't care if you're not a fan of Pink Floyd or even classic rock in general, buy it!! You won't regret it: after the first 3 songs, trust me, you will be mezmerized by the sheer size, grandeur and spectacle of the show. You will also witness some of the most ethereal, beautiful, mystifying, breathtaking visuals, vocals and guitar playing ever recorded on video.
I can't wait till it comes out!!!
Movie Review: Very Comfortably Numb, thank you! Summary: 5 Stars
An amazing DVD at an amazing price. The technical aspects have been covered hugely already, from the 4:3 aspect, being shot on video v film, brilliant 5.1 sound (I wish I had it) etc etc.
But this is an experience! Even with just a 68cm TV with no sound system other than the TV's speakers. It is a comprehensive visual and sonic document on one of the best ever band's legacies to its faithful followers, particularly for those of us not fortunate to have ever seen them live, and anyone else who wants to see a great show.
I have had the Pulse double live CD for several years and have always thought it was great. For the last year or so I have had the Roger Waters In the Flesh DVD, the only visual live record of Floyd tracks I had. This is 1/4 of the Floyd plus an impressive cast of fill-in musicians and is quite fine too. But Pulse DVD is the real deal. The light show, the effects, and the glorious music put on by 3/4 of the Floyd and some fine suplementary players.
I have watched both of the concert DVDs and not yet explored the extras. But it is great value for money. In Australia it is $25 (I think I paid $35 for the Pulse CDs years ago) or about US$18. It is worth the price for the full DSOTM performance. It is worth the price for the 3 song encore. Hell, I would have paid $25 to see Gilmore's Comfortably Numb just once!
Forget Gilmore v Rogers, 4:3 v widescreen, video v film. Just lay down the paltry sum and watch a damn fine show. And watch it again, and again ....
Movie Review: Outstanding testament to musical genius Summary: 5 Stars
I saw both the 1989 and the 1994 concerts and while I was not among the fortunate group who got to see Dark Side in its entirety, the Division Bell concert was FAR superior to the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour, which was documented by the Distant Sound of Thunder video.
Both concerts were true religious experiences. I have never witnessed anything before or since quite so magnificent.
As to those who decry this final iteration of Pink Floyd, as somehow "less than" without Roger Waters, I can only say "sour grapes". Yes, Waters was, and is, a brilliant writer, but his work became increasingly cynical and filled with despair. To label Gilmour's songwriting as "meaningless tripe", is only to say one prefers cynicism and despair over hope and altruism. Gilmour's "On the Turning Away" is a beautiful anthem to hope and one of the most powerful guitar solos in the Floydian repetoire.
Having said all of this, I couldn't help but get excited at the Live 8 reunion of the Floyds, and despite Waters' sometimes off key singing, it was a real treat to see them all onstage together, with the hope of one last "reconcillation" tour forthcoming. Alas, it is not to be. PULSE stands as a testament to the musical genius of all these men, and is a MUST own for any true Pink Floyd fan.
Debate the Waters or non-Waters Floyd all you want, but for me, it will always be Gilmour's ethereal guitar work that defined the music of Pink Floyd.
Movie Review: Pulse- The Best Music DVD ever? Summary: 5 Stars
I guess you could say that I am just a tad biased...
I have always known that i had a Pink Floyd "jones". From my early memories as a 16 year old listing to the very first PF album in my friend's basement-with a set of drums, a fender strat, and assorted other poor experimentations. On to Pink Floyd at Winterland SF, then at Fillmore West ( I think?) I even saw them in Australia in 1970-a disaster, as they were made to play at a horserace track.-Then on to 85' 94' Gilmore, Wright, Mason, the version on the DVD.(Just got hitched-5th row seats were our wedding gift to each other)& so on....
October 2006- I order Pulse. I listen to Pulse. It becomes a weekend ritual- I can stay up late on Fri. & Saturday nights; I listen & watch Pulse, headphones on, like a gourmet picking thru treats that are particularly fresh that night. It has become an obsession.I am going to wear out my copy. Already thinking of buying another copy. The thought of a skip or scratch is constantly on my mind. The lunatic is in my head.....
I have never experienced anything like it- Nothing is more interesting or profound to me- I hide it from my wife, Like a drug.. Although, no drugs are needed. This is the most musical fun I have had in years. As Richard Wright said about making Dark side fo the Moon: It is,was, magical, but i can't explain why. I am also absolutely positive that it will not have the same effect on everyone. I guess you had to be there.....
Movie Review: Worth it for "Dark Side" performance alone! Summary: 5 Stars
Personally, I can take or leave most of the first disc of this Pink Floyd concert DVD. The performance on disc two of the entire "Dark Side Of The Moon" album makes this DVD worth the asking price. It is an improvement on the original classic album and even better than when I witnessed the original four members of Pink Floyd perform it on the "Darkside" tour in 1973. To call this performance stellar would be an understatement. All the backup musicians along with Gilmour, Wright and Mason create an amazing lushness that deepens the dynamics of the original. Two drummers, two guitarists, two keyboards, three female vocalists, extended instrumentals and new rythymic grooves working their way into the familiar songs from this great, yet overplayed album. It becomes new and refreshing. "Dark Side Of The Moon" is a mood album that should be listened to in its entirety; not individual cuts mixed in with the other garbage on commercial radio - not even individual songs mixed in with Pink Floyd's other hits as I witnessed on the "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" Tour. This "Dark Side" performance on Pulse is something to behold. I've watched it five times. I've always believed that "Dark Side Of The Moon" was Pink Floyd's greatest accomplishment. There are three ways to enjoy it; the original album, the 5.1 surround-sound remaster of the original album and the ultimate experience of watching Pink Floyd and company on this DVD with 5.1 surround-sound.
