Movie Reviews of Pink Floyd - Pulse

Movie Review: A Staggering Emotional Experience
Summary: 5 Stars

As a life long Pink Floyd fan I took a female friend to see this tour in 1994, a woman who had never seen them live. The next day she told me that with the exception of giving birth to her daughter it was the most moving experience of her life.

Another friend described it as "like going to church on another planet."

For me it was the single most extraordinary aural and visual experience of my life, and deeply moving. From the number of people around me at the concert who during "Comfortably Numb" were literally weeping, hundreds of thousands of others have reacted in a similiar way.

Having seen the show live four times I cannot imagine how this DVD set could possibly have been presented more perfectly. Beyond the obvious limitations of reducing this monumental production to the small screen, it's all here.

If Pink Floyd are more than a rock band to you, if they're a part of your DNA, then you'll be blissfully satisfied and exhilarated three hours after you hit the play button.

For those that weren't fortunate enough to get to that point, especially younger viewers, you'll get it. You'll understand.

For those who are into lighting and sound and stagecraft, you'll see 12 year old technology that hasn't been touched by any other act. No one has come close. Short of Pink Floyd setting off a nuclear weapon over a stadium it's hard to imagine how the enormity of this creation could be topped.

For those who are guitar freaks, David Gilmour's work on this DVD is worthy of his face being on Mt. Rushmore.

A deeply beautiful and heart wrenching thing to watch. Words fail. Simply jaw dropping.

Movie Review: Terrific DVD of unbelievable concert! Must have for all PF fans!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am dumbfounded reading some of the negative reviews of this DVD.

Many are complaining about the video, which was shot in 4:3 aspect ratio and is not a widescreen look. Given the way the concert was shot, this was a wise decision not to cut off part of the picture for a widescreen look. Yeah, there are some mild grainy pictures, but unless your a professional cameraman the picture quality is still quite good.

And the sound is flawless, a powerful 5.1 surround that literally blows the speakers away.

The performance is shockingly good. Some reviewers are Roger Waters fans bemoaning his absence, but quite honestly you can't write lyrics and create concepts (Waters' strongest suits) during a concert, and his bass playing/singing is not missed at all (with the lone exception of the verses of Comf. Numb, which is more than compensated with a blistering solo at the end). The band is clearly enjoying themselves here and the song selection is dynamite. I hadn't listened to 'Sorrow' in a long time but the performance just blew me away. And songs like 'Coming Back to Life' and 'High Hopes' are now classics in their own right that sound even better with age (they were new at the time of this show).

This concert is flawless. Unfortunate that it was not shot in film, for a widescreen view, but the new sound mix as well as the extra goodies (Bootlegging the Bootleggers is worth the cost of the DVD alone, for a super-rare performance of the spine-tingling Marooned) kick this one over the rainbow. PF fans new and old would be well advised to have this in the collection.

Movie Review: The Best Concert Film Of All Time!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Hey You......

Stop complaining about this DVD. I admit, it would have been fantastic to see it in wide-screen format, but I am just happy that it finally has seen the light of day. The sound mix is amazing, and there are many things that I have heard that are lost on the original VHS and CD releases. An example is at the end of "High Hopes," the acoustic guitar keeps playing during the fade out for a long time, but I don't ever recall hearing that on my VHS or CD version of Pulse. Also, the bass mix is just fantastic, Guy Pratt did a great job on this tour, and added some much needed energy on stage for the group as well. I love the new camera shots (if you watched the VHS tape as much as I did growing up 12 years ago, you'll notice the new camera angles that they used.) A great shot of Nick playing the gong in "High Hopes," and of course, the shots during "Comfortably Numb" of the giant mirror ball look even better than ever. Wish they would have cut out more of the video footage in "Time" since it is included as a bonus feature, and shown more of the roto-tom solo, but I'm a drummer so I'd want to see that now wouldn't I :) Anyway.... if you're a hard-core Floyd fan, or even a casual Floyd-fan who wants to see what this band was all about, PLEASE!! go out and buy this today. Oh yeah, I love the Bootlegging the Bootleggers section, those songs NEEDED to be included in this set because they are some of the best things that the "New" Floyd produced. We're never getting a live DVD of "The Wall" so this is well worth your money!! Get it and Enjoy!!!!!
