Movie Reviews of Pink Floyd - PulseMovie Review: A benchmark in live recordings finally on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
Whether youre a Pink Floyd fan or not(and I really wasnt until now), this video presentation of the legendary rock group is an absolute must see.
I have been to many a great rock concert in my time, but never have I seen or heard such a finley tuned musical mix of radically honest social commentary and extraordinary visual entertainment.
Its amazing how the members of Pink Floyd and their producers/directors etc., successfully blends sad historical social realisms with a prophetic insight of what could become of this world we live in; yet it is entertining to the extreme. When you see this video, youll realize that its like a plasma charged documentary about the injustices of past and recent govenments, the highs and lows of the drug culture, stark opinions about high society and deep insights to the basic truths of the human condition all wrapped in to a techno-luminary visual and sound extravaganza. Thankfully, Pink Floyd doesnt shove this in your face, rather, there is a nice steady pulse when there should be, and pounding ones when appropriate. Many of the visuals are presented with keen likenesses to Pink Floyds brilliantly developed lyrical metaphors that actually make you laugh at times and really think at others...(see the segment Dark Side of the Moon.)
Its all beautifully mixed and bundled together with Gilmore and Cos famous musical scores, deeply profound psychological lyrics and emotionally charged psychodelic visual story telling. The awesome stage videos(presented inside of a gigantic revolving hoop)lighting and laser effects galore and superb sound mixing propel this concert event into a class all its own.
Pink Floyd Pulse is an eye and mind blowing theatrical experience that will take you through time, space and history in one of the most unique and brilliant ways ever produced in a concert setting. So pop in the video, turn out the lights, turn up the sound and dont take your pulse while watching this. David Gilmour is at his absolute best along with the Floyd gang and the light show is unbeatable.
5+ Stars.
NOW PLEASE RELEASE PINK FLOYD THE WALL LIVE DVD IN 2006!!!!!
Movie Review: The ultimate Pink Floyd DVD...until they'll release The Wall Live Summary: 5 Stars
It's clear from this that Pink Floyd was not at all a destroyed band, but one very much alive. The video allows for a close-up glimpse of the band in addition to the light display, that might be lost to the audience at the actual concert. For that it may even surpass the concertgoing experience for those who prefer a more intimate musical experience.
At times it may seem that the younger touring musicians are more "into it" than the band, but then Pink Floyd has always been more reserved than some. The Floyd members show their passion in subtler ways. If anybody in the band has a tendency to be visibly animated, surprisingly enough (or is it?) it's the softspoken keyboardist Richard Wright, who reacts very clearly to the music.
"But if I have the audio CD, should I buy this too?"
Absolutely! Even though most of the tracks are similar in style, on some the combination of light and sound heightens the experience. Also, the video-only tracks are well worth hearing. But perhaps the most stunning difference is in "Sorrow". While the CD version takes a more mournful, softer approach, the video version is a hard-rocking tune that draws the most passionate playing out of all three members. If David Gilmour and Nick Mason are on fire, then Richard Wright is positively explosive on this song. Letting loose with a screaming, uncharacteristically aggressive Hammond assault, one almost wonders if the keys will survive such a performance (especially given the fire in his eyes!).
The only thing at all lacking on the VHS was the picture quality, which although good, is not up to modern standards of clarity. The long awaited upcoming DVD will rectify this.
Ps: Count me in too!, please release The Wall Live DVD in 2006. There's a petition which more than 5,200 fans have signed in!. We know there's a lot of footage both from Earls Court 1980,} and 1981, and Nassau Coliseum 1980. Also there's a documentary from behind the wall out there!. Even on the official site we can watch footage from The Wall Live concerts!. Please let it happen
Movie Review: Best live show ever Summary: 5 Stars
Great show, disc two is the best, with all of Dark Side Of The Moon and a great version of Comfortably Numb. David Gilmour is simply one of the all time great guitarists. The stage and lighting for this show are simply spectacular! The image quality is very good, considering it was originally filmed on video. The sound is excellent, I dont have a 5.1 Surround system, but it sounds awesome in plain old stereo. Yes, I could nitpick about some things, the tempos are rushed on some of the old tunes and the extra percussionist guy is a little annoying. Overall though, all the tunes are very well done.
Lots of cool extras, like the ability to watch the screen films by themselves.
If you will bear with me I am going to address the age old argument about whether this is really Pink Floyd, without Roger Waters on stage. It is true that Waters wrote all the great lyrics and came up with the concepts. However, the classic "Pink Floyd sound" has little to do with Waters. It is David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Here is a direct quote from Waters in Musician magazine in 1992: "I was never a bass player. I've never played anything. I play guitar a bit on the records and would play bass, because I sometimes want to hear the "sound" I make when I hit a string on a bass with a pick or my finger; it makes a different sound than anybody else makes, to me. But I've never been interested in playing the bass. I'm not interested in playing instruments and I never have been..." In fact, Gilmour played bass on a lot of the studio recordings (One Of These Days, Pigs, to mention a few)! So there you have it folks. Yes, this IS Pink Floyd playing Pink Floyd music, with lyrics by Roger Waters. Give Roger his due, but it is absolute rubbish to say that these guys are not Floyd witout Waters. End of rant.
If you like Pink Floyd, you will love this DVD. If you are not a fan, you will be after watching this. Buy it!
Movie Review: 5 star audio - 2 stars for the video mixer/producer Summary: 5 Stars
Awesome concert. The genius behind doing the complete DSOTM album as sort of an encore still blows me away.
David Gilmour had a hand in the audio mix and a fine job he did. The 6-channel sound really shines on a good full range 5.1 system.
The down side (come on there's always something) is the videography.
While a Floyd concert has lots to show the mixer did not edit it for musicians for sure. He rarely stays on one scene for any length of time. Like 5 to 15 seconds, especially on disc 2.
I'm refering to like when Daivd is burning his solo on "Comfortably Numb" we see a total of maybe 15 seconds of his fingerwork. Instead we get crowd shots, the back of the drummer's head, anything but David.
I think of David as on of my top three favorite guitar players and rarely get to see him play on this DVD.
I guess if you're not a guitar player or one that likes to watch the members actually play their respected solos, just go ahead and click "not helpful" and release your anger that someome found a minor fault to his own liking. Musicians will know what I mean.
But this seems to be the case with most every concert DVD or VHS I own. Maybe one day this will change and a video producer will actually like the music as much as his own interpretation of his "artistic" view of the way it should be.
Overall others have expressed my opinions tastefully and it is truly an amazing concert from one of the few legends of music.
I truly believe whether you are a fan of Floyd or not you will enjoy this masterpiece.
Enjoy the experience.
Now, can David please get to work on releasing "The Delicate Sound Of Thunder" on a 5.1 DVD! I have the Laser Disc but would love a 5.1 DVD. I think the band had fun doing Delicate Sound and the women did a much better job on "The Great Gig In The Sky" on Delicate. Just a though for his next project.
RIP Sid.
Movie Review: P.U.L.S.E=Pink Floyd's.Ultimate.Lighting.Show.Extraordinaire Summary: 5 Stars
The first thing I did Tuesday was buy this.I'v been watching it every day since because it is the best music dvd ever put together. All the songs are performed perfectly and thankfully the annoying backing vocals on Money aren't as loud as the Delicate Sound of Thunder version.Even though Roger Waters' absence is noticeable during some songs,IMO most noticeablely Brain Damage,I think Guy Pratt does a good job especially on One Of These Days.Me being a huge fan of Waters' and in my opinion he is the most talented songwriter in music I think the only way this concert could have been the best concert ever is if Roger was there. But its great nonetheless.Song comments:Learning to Fly:I'm a drummer and I didn't think this could be better than the original but the percussion in the beginning and end are very cool and has made me love this song even more.Another Brick in The Wall pt2:The sounds from The Wall in the beginning are interesting.Good performence but I still think this song can't be performed right live because there is always something that should be different but its nice.Run Like Hell:My favorite PF song this is in my opinion the best song here. The way the explosions go off in the end and the band just playing like hell is great.Like a lot of other versions the keyboard solo could be better but it works. The extras are cool. My favorite being Say Goodbye to Life as we Know it I wish that could have been longer but I'm glad its here. The Tour Stuff is also good to have but I was hoping they wouldn't stay for a few seconds and then change. So this is Pulse and it shows why Pink Floyd has to be seen live to be believed. My last comment is that I'm not a kid unless being 15 makes me a kid I just wanted to get it done faster.
