Movie Reviews of Pink Floyd - Pulse

Movie Review: The greatest show on earth...
Summary: 5 Stars

...and still, over a decade later, far from seeming outdated. It takes your breath away, the rhythms, the light show. The flowing sound of some of the best songs ever in the history of rockn' roll. "Todays'" Pink Floyd has style, so presise and talented -and in my opinion (in this show) better than ever! Thank God Roger Waters left, we'd never had experienced this progress had he still dominated the band. I am a big fan of the Pink Floyd-albums he "headed" (or had a major influence on that is, and without doubt), but after "The Wall" and "The Final Cut" -well, enough was enough. The way he has critized David Gilmour, accusing him for never coming up with any workable ideas during their "creative relationship" -he has even called Phil Collins a disaster as an artist. Roger Waters, who are you to talk? I must admit Collins' resent albums are a bit uninspiring, but he is at least a far better musician than you'll ever be. In Floyd Waters was a consept-builder, David Gilmour was (and is) his voice and together with Richard Wright put the sound to Waters ideas (Mason too of course). And what a sound! What would "Wish you were here" have been without Wrights' tangents? Imagine the sound-picture then. And the title track itself without Gimours' voice and guitar? I usually don't give a damn about people hating post-Water-Floyd, but do not even dare to call David Gilmour a session-player. That was then, in the late 60's! An "ok back-up singer"? Oh yeah, you know what you are talking about, don't you??

David Gilmour has, without doubt, the best voice out of the four band members. And what an amazing voice! Do you honestly think that if he didn't have the incredible voice he has the controll-freak of a certain Mr Waters would have even allowed the man to sing? Richard Wright too has a better voice, so please! Waters can't sing, he can write. On his solo-albums he more speaks than sings anyway, and it works on those. But imagine him sing lead on "Wish you were here" (as an example). I don't think so... But none of that really matters, after Syd the band was blessed with David -and look what happened! Is this band a big failure? As with other more open-minded music-loving revieweres has tried in vein, well, I get in line; Leave Pink Floyd alone, get over it!

Enough of that -finally the dvd is soon to be out on the market, and I repeat; Finally! I have been looking for this for many years now, finally worthy sound and picture. And the extras do anything but ruin the event for sure -enjoy!

Movie Review: Enough is Enough... Enjoy it or leave it!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great DVD. Every time I have the chance to see Pink Floyd one more time, I take it and rejoice.

Now, to some reviewers still believing that PF died with Syd then again with Roger, I say ENOUGH with the ranting. If you don't like Pink Floyd with David Gilmour then listen to something else. We know that the band started with Syd (actually Nick and Roger are the two first surviving members of the various pre-PF bands, which subsequently led to the formation of PF). We also know that Dave "replaced" Syd (actually he was added to the band as support in case Syd would default, and was not intended to replace Syd - it just turned out this way). Dave cared enormously for Syd as demonstrated by Dave's production efforts of Syd's later solo albums and other initiatives and tributes. We also know that Roger is talented and a brilliant lyricist, and the inspiration behind many PF landmarks. But Syd left on his own, and Roger left on his own. So be it. We can't change the past. To his credit, David Gilmour did what he had to do after Roger's departure because he loved Pink Floyd as a band, which at the time, was not what could be said about Roger. Roger would never have been musically as creative if it had not been for Rick, David and Nick. The impact of Rick and David in particular on the musical orchestration is immense (watch the making of Dark Side of the Moon and you will discover how Rick impacted the musical direction of many songs). The difference between a good and a great song often lies in subtle elements - like the famous guitar lines on Wish You Were Here or Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I love Gilmour. Bravo for Pulse. The more I see of Pink Floyd, in ANY version, the better. Like a real person PF has evolved and changed, they have LIVED a full and creative life. Pulse is about being ALIVE. If the remaining members had no talent, they would not be able to play such impeccable performance of the entire DARK SIDE live on stage 20 years after its original release. Because no matter your opinion, PF was still much better with Roger, than Roger is on his own, despite his undeniably impressive talent (and that of Jeff Beck) in "Amused to Death". I like what Roger is doing, but I am not criticizing his work because he left PF.

Enjoy Pulse and the great memories that this DVD will surely bring back. We will have to wait a long time before another band of the greatness of Pink Floyd comes around, if that ever happens, so let's enjoy what we do have.

Movie Review: Best Pink Floyd DVD (only true concert from them so far)
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one of the DVDs that I really wanted to be released since I had never seen the VHS version. I've heard that the VHS version is better and while that may be possible, this is an excellent DVD considering it is in full screen and also it was shot in 1994. Pink Floyd's performance is flawless and they are geniuses when it comes to matching the audio and the visual elements together. While I would have enjoyed more closeups of Gilmour playing guitar (especially at the end of "Comfortably Numb," during certain parts of "Shine On," and during most of "Breathe" and "Keep Talking")you still get plenty of shots of one of the best guitarists in the world playing his instrument. There are plenty shots of Wright on keyboards and Mason on drums. The music itself is flawless. The only real let downs for me are "Take It Back (I just don't like that song)" and "High Hopes (performed well but not at all enough shots of the band playing)." Highlights include "Shine On,"
"Time," "Wish You Were Here," "Run Like Hell," "Money," "Another Brick In the Wall Part 2," "Coming Back To Life," "Sorrow," "One Of These Days," "Comfortably Numb," "Us and Them," and "Any Color You Like." The special features include 4 bootleg performances including excellent renditions of "On The Turning Away," "Poles Apart," and "What Do You Want From Me." The bootleg performance of "Marooned" does not contain any shots of the band playing. There is also a special feature of Billy Corgan inducting Pink Floyd into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then performing "Wish You Were Here" with Gilmour and Wright. Those are the best special features included in the package. There needs to be some Pink Floyd concert DVDs released from their 70s period with the classic lineup of Gilmour, Wright, Mason, and Waters. I know that there is footage from that period because there are little bits included on the Classic Albums: Dark Side of the Moon. Who knows if any of these shows will ever be released though since there is so much anger between Gilmour and Waters now. It's a shame because while I like Gilmour better than Waters, the two of them produced better music together. But getting back to the Pulse DVD, this is a real treat for all Pink Floyd fans and so far the best and only true concert DVD of the band.

Movie Review: Greatest Gig in the Sky - Region Free release!
Summary: 5 Stars

I attended four of the performances at Earls Court. Having flown from South Africa to London, I was hardly going to attend just once.

The opening night's show was actually cancelled/postponed after a section of the stadium seating collapsed and sent a few fans to hospital (they were lucky enough to be visited in hospital by some of the band the next day.) The cancelled show was re-held a few days later. Of the four shows that I saw, each one had minor variations in the set list.

Two of the four featured the full Dark Side of the Moon
performances. The shows were spectacular and the band right "on" each night. It's been a long wait for this classic show to make it out on DVD and the wait is finally nearly over!

Those of us who "met" on the 'net over the weeks prior to the show and congregated at the White Horse (pub near Parson's Green tube stop) please try and contact me via email: white-horse-inn at KuyperHoffman dot com

UPDATE post release:
I have not actually yet had a chance to watch this (maybe this evening?) but first note is that it has been distributed as a Region-Free (Region 0) set! This is wonderful news and brings hope for those who fear one day moving to a different country and face replacing their entire collection of DVDs (or "breaking the law" by copying their discs with a region-breaking app or hacking their DVD players.) Political BS, this region encoding.

I am really looking forward to watching this and reaching my own conclusions regarding the A/V quality.

Finally, also to chip in on the 4:3 vs 16:9 aspect ratio - as much of a widescreen fan as I am, I would also hate to see the video refactored by the studio - if you want to watch it in widescreen, simply use the zoom feature (never use "stretch") on your TV/projector - it will just as easily throw away the top and bottom of the screen as the producers would have.

[RANT ON]Stretch is dreadful as it warps the image, making objects at the edges appear fat and distorted. TNT have a nasty habit of applying stretch to some of their "hidef" programming. Horrid, just horrid. [RANT OFF]

Enjoy this concert for what it is and also take its ultimate release date as a fitting tribute to Syd's passing.

Movie Review: Unbelievable... Is this the apex of western civilization?!?
Summary: 5 Stars

I had forgotten how great a major concert can be. Over the years I'd lost interest in Pink Floyd, too commercial, too slick, too boring etc, but this show (from a series of performances in London in 1994) is GREAT, the music, lighting, props, and film/projection at the show as well as production value of this DVD is top notch. I'd gladly spend big bucks to see a show like this now - live (as it was I surprised myself staying up way too late to watch the whole thing). I'm used to much smaller venues these days, but getting 30 to 40 thousand people together for a Vegas style sound and light experience is really something special and remarkable. The crowd looks suitably blown away, and it got me high too, (and brought tears to my eyes during the vocal solos of Great Gig in the Sky).

I remember The Distant Sound Of Thunder CD having a distracting amount of audience noise (they never seemed to stop and listen!), and was pleased to have it be much more in the background for this concert's mix. The sound is really good (even as just audio). Having Dark Side of the Moon performed in entirety was great (alot of emphasis on the trippy projection and lights), and the encore of Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell was powerful with the grand finale' of lazers, lights and explosions being over the top but fun too. However, I liked the beginning of the concert (disc 1) more. The only other concert DVD I've seen close to this level of art and grandure is Peter Gabriel's '03 GROWING UP tour, but this is much more intense and cohesive. I missed Waters and wondered how much better or different it would have been with him, but overall, the show is complete as is.

The DVD has alot of special features that I haven't yet explored, but I'm sure they will be fun.

What impressed me most was the way the band appeared to have fun, playing consciously, relaxed and yet restrained, fully aware of their effect... It made me seriously think this is a good expression of the peak of our civilization (union of technology, art and consciousness, materiality and spirituality presented as entertainment, but delivering much more.)

Even for the casual Pink Floyd fan this is a must see.
