Movie Reviews of PiMovie Review: This is review #216 Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is darkly brilliant - the B&W, grainy camerawork really adds to the atmosphere. The story of obsession is one we can all relate to, and Max's descent into madness is brilliantly filmed and acted. Although the cults and corporations trying to steal Max's information are an interesting part of the story, it is the protagonist's internal conflicts that are the center of the film. The R rating is well deserved though, as the hallucination scenes are quite disturbing, and the images of a disembodied brain are positively creepy. I would suggest this one to people who can deal with a movie that is slow-paced in its storytelling, but fast-paced in the way it is shot. The plot is gripping, and the films dark tone will freak you out (esp. if you're on drugs, hint hint..) The extras are great, too...a music video, two trailers, two commentaries, some behind-the scenes footage, and some other stuff. If you've been raised on "Die Hard" and "Twister," this movie's not for you, however, if you're a fan of cerebral thrillers or the indie scene, it will knock you out. 11:15 - restate my assumptions...
Movie Review: Simply - Prophetic Summary: 5 Stars
To liken Pi to Eraser Head is just about the dummest pigeon-hole I've ever come across. I am a fan of David Lynch as well as Jean Cocteau. Ok, it might be reminiscent of both styles of direction but, that's as far as it goes. Pi is simply brilliant and unique in its own way. To call the film 'a student effort' is an attribute made by someone who obviously hasn't a clue about film-making. The acting is superb. The photography / cinematography is simply wonderful. I should know - I'm in the business. Further reading / stimulation: If you are into advanced mathematics: 'The Anthropic Cosmological Principle' by Barrow and Tipler will make your toes curl. Additional reading - if you're into the patterns of nature, or that giant organism that is 'us', try 'Gaia' by J.E. Lovelock. And if you are into Super-Computers, Kurzweil's 'The Age of Spiritual Machines' maps out the next century for you. Having spent the last eight years researching the subject, I cannot agree that Pi lacks research. For anyone nonplussed after seeing Pi then, watch it again and again. If you still don't get it, my advice is: GIVE UP
Movie Review: Almost as good as Requiem....but still fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
This is an incredible movie. I had my doubts about this movie when I first sat down to watch it, but Darren Aronofsky really blew me away with this film. For those of you that hate films that don't really end completely resolved, and carry a very strong message, this film is not for you. There is a very strong message here, but a lot of people won't take the time to look for it. The movie is basically about a mathematical genius, who intends to discover a cryptic number in the Bible that contains the true name of God. According to some of my more religious friends, a lot of this stuff isn't Biblically accurate, but I could care less. The man doesn't believe in the existence of a higher power. Everything is based in math and tangible principles. Meanwhile, various factions struggle to use the man's mind for their own designs. This movie says a lot about the true nature of the world, and the true nature of man. The message at the end is decidedly more positive than the one contained in Requiem for a Dream, and it still makes for powerful viewing. See this movie at once.
Movie Review: Amazing scientific vanity Summary: 5 Stars
A strange black and white movie about a mathematician who believes everything in nature is mathematical and patternable, including the Stock Exchange. He meets with the Jewish numerical ideology of the Kabbalah and that does not improve his vision. The result is explosive and of course proves what is supposed to be proved, viz. the vanity of mathematics and mathematicians. A film that is interesting only to those who have a certain amount of scientific and technological orientation. And from the very start it is shown as a disease that is the result of the illumination you get when you penetrate some mathematical secret: the same as when you watch the sun, which makes you blind at first and then leaves you with severe headaches when the blindness recedes. In other words a film that orients you rather towards the graceful and slow spiritual dancing of the Chinese in China town.

Movie Review: Fantastic introduction to a brilliant new voice in film... Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this on video the day it was released to video stores. I was not expecting much, but much is what I got! This hyperkenetic, disjointed, mind-numbingly paced film is one of the more interesting independant films to pop up in a while. The main character feels that he can solve the "pattern" behind the stock market's seemingly unpredictable ups and downs. His theory makes him the target of wall-street corporations who want to make a fortune from his theory and, most interestingly, a rabbi who feels that his theory can help prove the truthfulness of religous texts. He drives himself mad, and the movie becomes just as insane as it's main character. While this IS a fantastic movie, I don't feel that the technique is as innovative and original as many say. Go find Tetsuo: The Iron Man, a 61 minute Japanese experimental film from '89, and compare the styles. Aronofsky owes more than a little to that movie... A fascinating film though... Check out the superior, though much different, follow-up Requiem for a Dream.
