Movie Reviews of PiMovie Review: Mind-Bending, Shocking, Refreshing........Outstanding! Summary: 5 Stars
It is incredibly refreshing to see an independent film of such high caliber, devoid of any trace of Hollywood-ity. I agree though, with a comment which seems to occur in about every 2nd or 3rd person's review: "It's not for everyone." But for those of us who enjoy this genre of movie, it's a great ride with a fitting techno soundtrack; which complements the storyline just as well as Pink Floyd's music for "The Wall." I read that the film was made for just over (or around) $60,000 and Sean Gullette (who plays Max Cohen) also designed the official website. Only one blaring contradiction that I could detect though: Why, if Max isn't motivated by money or the acquisition of material possessions (he states this in the movie), is he looking for an equation to periodicity of the stock market? And, no one from the Government-agency-who-monitors-this-type-of-thing Bureau ever came after him either, which they SURELY would have. In a movie world that is filled with glitzy million-dollar special effects, at last we see a prime example of a film in which they aren't necessary for success (although see "The Matrix;" great story and effects...trust me). Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Rick B., MD, I'm glad you did. So far, you're the only one I've spoken to who liked it. Mike S., sorry you didn't....you get to pick next time.
Movie Review: Starving For More "Pi" Summary: 5 Stars
It's not often that anyone will find a film that absolutely will not let you forget it. I have discovered one such film and it is called "Pi." After recently purchasing the DVD version of this film, I was even more impressed with it after I watched some of the behind-the-scenes and video segments. At first, a person might not feel comfortable with Max, the crazed mathematician, as his character is very "phobic"in many respects. However, in time you will find yourself feeling and maybe even cheering for this somewhat disturbed genius. The black and white photography is also another big issue in this film. It helps the film achieve this somewhat bleak and cold feeling world of Maximilian Cohen. In a sense, this film achieves its goal of drawing you into the characters individual, yet linking situations, because the subject of numbers in society and the effect they have upon our daily lives can't help but feel cold and lifeless to begin with. Adding the black and white photography only helps excel this feeling of a world becoming dehumanized by itself. To unveil any further information about this wonderful piece of film making would disrespect it, so I need not to continue. I can only say, that if you love to see true, artful, unhampered thinking film making in action, "Pi" is that very such thing and should scratch anyone's creative itch.
Movie Review: Aronofsky: The Next Kubrick? Summary: 5 Stars
I just wanted to add to the laudatory reviews that, as I watched the film, I couldn't get over the idea that I was seeing the premiere work of the next "Stanley Kubrick" (and, compared to Kubrick's early work -- "Killer's Kiss" and "The Killing" -- "Pi" is VERY mature, indeed). Aronofsky's biting humor and fearless themes of intellect-gone-haywire, the high-price of high-technology and the still Simian power-drives of paranoid humankind -- coupled with a detailed use of claustrophobic POV-camera angles (shades of "Clockwork Orange" and "Strangelove") and the magical mutation of the everyday world into a "Twilight Zone" nightmare -- reminded me of Maestro Kubrick. I am in no way saying that Aronofsky is copying Kubrick, but they are both artists with similar sensibilities who are acutely sympathetic to the social, psychological, religious and scientific tremors rippling through the second half of the 20th century. They know that the world's on fire, but their rigorous intellects drive both men to create films in which the flames are thrilling, frightening, and funny... and that warm spot we feel is our own flesh melting. Now that, sadly, there is no Stanley Kubrick to make Stanley Kubrick movies there is an even greater need for the work of Darren Aronofsky. I hope he can stay the course.
Movie Review: A really good debut from an important film-maker. Summary: 5 Stars
I realyl didn't know much about "Pi" when I rented it. I had heard it was really good, and I had heard it was very cleverly done. I watched it and I was amazed. The movie's grainy black and white, while a little annoying in the beginning ends up adding so much to the texture. Several chase scenes near the end would have seemed boring an monotonous hadn't it been for the black and white and shaky filming. On the commentary track for this DVD, Aronofsky reveals another thing that makes this film so cool. What he calls "hip-hop entandre's" add to the paranoid feelings on Max (the protagonist played by Sean Gullette, a mathmeticion exploring wall street and the number pi). These "hip-hop entandres" are combinations of fast sounds and fast camera shots. The movie is awesome. Aronofsky and Libatique (the director of photography) have made a film that is almost flawless. After wathcing this movie you know that this team is going somehwere. Aronofsky wrote and directed it, proving he is a ture talent. A movie this good as a debut goes to show that a lot is expected of him. He conquered "Pi" when he wrote and directed "Requiem for a Dream" with Hubert Selby, Jr. "Pi" is an important debut from an extremely talented and important director.
Movie Review: "Or Maybe It's Genius." Summary: 5 Stars
The main character is a paranoid, out of order, lock in, mathamatician that never stops calculating. But hold on, there's more to the story. This guy is also an envelope pusher. When the movie starts, we realize that his character is not all together there. He has frequent headaches and nightmares. Could be due to his condition: when he was a little boy he stared up into the sun for a dangerous amount of time. the doctors say that his pupils dialated to the size of pin holes. But that's not what the story is about. The story is really about a set of numbers. No one really knows what it is.
One says it's random computer junk.
Another thinks it's part of a code.
One thinks it could help figure out the stock market.
A group of people think that it is a code for the actual name of God.
The real insanity comes from just knowing that the code exsists. That's what the character goes through. If it is not a numerial code for good . . .could it be a numerial code for evil?
Full of intrigue, suspense, and an interest in math.
the movie is in full black and white.
Really wierd camera angles as well as some messed up scenes. Soundtrack is also weird, like from the twighlight zone. Rent it, if anything else.
Enjoy!
