Movie Reviews of Phish - Live in VegasMovie Review: Great Sound... Bad DVD Summary: 3 Stars
First of all this is a great show and i love watching it. However it has to be one of the most poorly made DVDs i have ever seen. It is very clear to me that fiting the whole show on one disc was the priority, picture quality and dvd design were an after thought. I design DVDs for a living and there really is no excuse for a dvd to stop playing at the end of the movie (dvd does not return to the menu). With over 175 minutes of video, they have taken the picture so far down that you can see tons of digital noise and at times the sound is out of sync with the picture. I just hope that they consider a two disc set for there next release. All in all, this is a good DVD and i would still recommend buying it.
Movie Review: disappointingly low energy Summary: 3 Stars
I was hoping for a more jam oriented show and less vocally oriented. Let's face it, they aren't exactly the best singers. I hope they put out DVDs from some of the mid 90s shows. That's when they really rocked!
Movie Review: Better than the real thing. Summary: 3 Stars
If you've ever heard of Phish, you'd know that this is a rockin' good concert. A great time all around, this is not only recommended to any Phish fan, but to music fans in general!
Movie Review: Of all the great Phish concerts...Why release this show? Summary: 2 Stars
Great audio, subpar video, a sleepy performance. Anyone who is familiar enough with Phish to shell out money to buy a dvd will know what this band was capable of on any given night. There were amazing jaw-dropping nights, great nights and occasionally an uninspired, low-energy performance. This dvd release falls under the latter. I don't buy the take-whatever-you-can-get-and-be-happy argument. Not when you know there are probably tons of releasable videos sitting in the Phish vault. I would even be glad to buy a dvd of the stationary-one-camera videos being offered on LivePhish.com if it was of a transcendent performance like 12-29-97 currently available there for download. Why they chose to release this evening in Vegas from 2000, I'll never know.
This release was the second of two shows in Vegas and Trey's birthday. The show from the previous night included Kid Rock and it's probably not a stretch to assume they all celebrated Trey's birthday into the wee hours of the morning because you can't help but get the feeling from watching this dvd that they are all very sleepy. It is reflected in two low-energy sets.
The show begins anticlimactically with the band swapping instruments for Walfredo and it sets the tone for the entire show. A person seeing Phish for the first time was probably like, What the...?
Mike's Song can carry a show on it's back, and it closes out the first set - it segues into Simple and then loses steam meandering into I Saw It Again and Esther before chugging into Weekapaug. The second set is dominated by Col. Forbin which includes a long description of a dream Trey had and then he thanks the road crew. In a high-energy jamfest, Trey's monologues are a welcome, usually entertaining break, but on this night it brought an already slow show down to a crawl - probably at the expense of another song or two, or three. A forgettable Twist follows and then a very long Sand has Trey plunking around on his keyboard where it quickly loses momentum and stays there. They close with The Beatles, A Day In The Life and the encore is the Stones, Emotional Rescue to put everyone back to sleep.
In closing, I would suggest NOT playing this dvd for anyone who never had the pleasure of seeing Phish live. Steer them towards IT or maybe Bittersweet and in the meantime hope that Phish will release a dvd you would be proud to turn others on to......Big Cypress?
Movie Review: PHISH Delivers! Summary: 2 Stars
I was at this show in Vegas. It was Trey's Birthday, so already the crowd was extra excited. The night before saw the boys bring out Kid Rock so we knew we were in for a wild ride. The first set was beautiful. Very solid - Walfredo, Curtain With, Mikes Groove with a Esther in it! Sick set! Second set started out with all us in the crowd singing happy birthday to Trey which was really cool. The highlight of the set was the Col. Forbins where Trey opened up and spoke about the hiatus, and then told us a very cool and strange story, but I won't tell you what he said. You'll have to find that out for yourself. If you are even remotely a fan of PHISH, then get this DVD! Follow Up - I said earlier that i had seen the webcast saved on a friends computor. This DVD is an exact copy of that. From the quality of the picture (it looks digitized) its almost as if they ripped the whole show straight off of the computer that broadcasted it over the net. Camera work is terrible! My own personal opinion is that a live dvd should enhance the performance on stage - this detracts from it. There were only three cameras on stage and one in at the soundboard, and its the same angles over, and over, and over again with no rhyme or reason. And the mix is almost an exact copy of the webcast as well. If there was even a small effort to present this concert in a way that it would actually look good on film, and the mix was finessed in the slightest, then i would have no doubt given a five star... This was a great show! I love this band! But... the dvd was too poorly produced. With that said - if you're a fan and you just want to be able to watch PHISH on your TV like me, then get it! If you are expecting Listener Supported, or Live From The Vault style stuff here, you will be disapointed. Two Stars - like i said, it was a great show.
