Movie Reviews of Phish - Live in Vegas

Movie Review: Excellent Video Quality Considering!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the reviews of this DVD with a large grain of salt, do to my college education in Telecom: Radio & TV. I took a semester in lighting and a couple in video electronics and leaned a few things 15 years ago. The number may have changed a little as technology has progressed but I think I will be pretty accurate for the production of this DVD.

Lighting contrast numbers are as following, Human eye 100:1, Film 30:1, Television 25:1. This means that the brightest amount of light can be 100 times more then the darkest for a human to see detail. The DVD is a concert that was light for a live audience, NOT the video cameras! So we lost over 60% of the detail there! In concert lighting we "paint" the stage using color filters, gels, to add to the stage presentation. You will notice that quite often the screen will go red or another color as all the lights use a common color filter.

Video is made up of 3 basis colors Red 29%, Green 60%, and Blue 11% to give you the color picture. Good cameras are 3 CCD chip camera, meaning they have 3 pickup devices with color filters on them. So if I put a red gel on my light and then point a camera at the person I have just knocked out most of the green and blue pickup device and now I am using about 35% of my cameras pickup capability, (number rounded up as red light is not pure).

Now rewatch the DVD and remember that we loose over 60% to lighting contrast and depending on the color filter we are loosing detail there too!

Having shot live stage performances, mostly theater productions that light at 100:1, I was quite amazed at the detail they pulled out of the concert. The only way Phish would get better video quality would be to light for video, but then it would probably take away from the Vibe of the show.

Oh yea, it sounds great in Dolby 5.1! I sure hope Phish puts out more shows on DVD.

Movie Review: Phish's Final Pre-Hiatus Concert
Summary: 5 Stars

"Phish - Live in Vegas" does not deliver Phish's best show - not even one of their greatest shows. Yet, it delivers a significant show being their final pre-hiatus show.

During a break between songs, Trey comments on the significance of the show. He explains that the band has enjoyed nineteen great years, how they are taking a break, and how he hopes for nineteen great years after the break. We now know that will not happen, since Phish played their farewell concert in Coventry, Vermont at the end of their 2004 Summer Tour.

Speaking of Coventry, Phish's last song at that festival and last song of their career as a band together, "The Curtain With," also happens to round out this DVD. Another notable song from this DVD is "Mike's Groove," a slow instrumental snippet of "Rift," a rendition of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life," and an interesting "Walfredo" with Trey on piano, Page on drums, Fish on Bass, and Mike on guitar. Another highlight of this DVD is Phish's rendition of "I Didn't Know," an a cappella number that features a Jon Fishman vacuum cleaner solo.

This is a great DVD to add to your Phish collection or to get introduced to Phish's material.

Movie Review: fantanstic
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is amazing. Mike's Song is absolutely beautiful. Many people are complaining about the video quality which I will admit is not up to par, but its still very watchable and I didn't have a problem with it. The highlights of this show are definately the sound quality and the lights. Watching this DVD in the dark and taking advantage of the glorious lighting is something that the IT DVD can't provide. Another thing that was great is the way that shots of the crowd were incorporated into the jams. As for the complaints that the band is "bored", the band is no where near as energetic as I've seen them before but they are by no means not interested in playing. All in all, this DVD is worth every penny. My friends and I sat through the entire show laughing the whole time, what with Trey forgettng the words and solo to Esther, the vaccum solo, Page screaming "I saw it again", shots of Phans in the crowd, and just the band in general. Go out and get this DVD.

Movie Review: Audio Great - Video So So
Summary: 5 Stars

Phish at LV. Good show. Trey announces the hiatus but the croud does not care - audio is great but the video at times is very dull and out of focus. Trey flubs lyrics to Esther in 1st set but who cares Fishman is really laughing on this one. I like to see concert DVD's - Phish does great with this first one. It isn't perfect but honestly can you remember this show if you went to it - get the DVD and bring back the memories. I actually have my sense of smell activated by this DVD and I can swear I smell something as I am watching the concert. It is as close to being there but not being there.

Movie Review: A Fun Evening
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't succumb to the hype one way or the other, unless it's in the direction of the other. This show rocks. There are moments of pure glory as well as moments of utter ridiculousness. It all gels together in a momentous fashion; I would say the most thorough enjoyment would come watching it all in one go. And, as far as the "picture" quality; give it a break. It's concert footage. I actually prefer the glossed over, erratic, fuzzy and uncertain views that are established...it coincides and oscillates with the tempo and fury of the notes within. All good things to those who partake.
