Movie Reviews of Phantom of the ParadiseMovie Review: Rich and famous Summary: 5 Stars
A great piece of work. Great music, great screenplay, great directing. The classical story is interlaced with elements from the world of musicals, and allusions to Oscar Wilde's «The Portrait of Dorian Gray» add up to the lyrical aspect of the plot. The sets are very colorful and the actors are always overacting, which gives the movie a surreal, «théatral» texture, as in Kubrik's «A Clockwork Orange». Among the works of dePalma, this movie stands a bit alone, but we can still recognize his style : split screen, subjective camera, use of colors, especially red in this case... However, 1974 being a while ago, I doubt today's young people will appreciate. But we never know...
Movie Review: OH MY!! Summary: 5 Stars
Holy phreaking COW...I first saw this movie a week ago (because I am a Phantom phanatic and I'd cringed from it long enough!) and I must say I was PLEASANTLY surprised to find such an interesting, hilarious satirical take on the rather gothic love story. It was definitely original and in my opion is right up there with my other phave cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. I highly reccommend this film and, as something I plan to do this Halloween, tie your phriends to chairs and make them watch it! They'll thank you after they stop beating you senseless...if they manage to escape!!! *maniacal laughter*
Movie Review: A love story in true rock and roll fashion Summary: 5 Stars
There is the unrelentless love that plays out in this tragic tale of the underdog who has more to offer than the world will ever know. He loves from afar and suffers the torment of being locked away to suffer both physically and emotionally while someone else gets the girl (and the credit). The music is brilliant, and the characters are so unique and different that one is fascinated from start to finish. Brian DePalma, who brought us "Carrie" and "Blowout," departs in his style all together to let us know that he too was a slave to the world of rock and roll - and all the craziness that goes with it.
Movie Review: Rock and Roll! (With a little bloodshed thrown in.) Summary: 5 Stars
A young man is interrupted mid-suicide attempt by the Devil, promising him eternal youth in exchange for his signature in blood, and the never-aging, mysterious and powerful music mogul Swan is born! The evil Swan creats wealth by making and breaking careers and major musical trends. The multi-talented Paul Williams is magnificent in the role, and his musical score is perfection.
Phantom of the Paradise is a cult film that has earned critical raves for Brian Depalma. Don't miss the chance to own it on DVD.
Movie Review: The Greatest Rock Film of All Time!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I WAS PROBABLY 17 WHEN I SAW THIS ORIGINALLY. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GOING TO SEE BUT I CAN REMEMBER SITTING IN A SMALL MALL THEATER IN THE LATE 70'S AND JUST BEING FLOORED.ALMOST 20 SOME YEARS LATER THIS MOVIE STILL AFFECTS ME THE SAME WAY. WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST THINGS BRIAN DEPALMA EVER DID. FROM THE ACTING TO THE MUSIC, THIS MOVIE IS EVERYTHING YOU WOULD WANT IN A ROCK AND ROLL FILM. IF ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO BUY THE SOUNDTRACK!!! I CAN STILL SING EVERY SONG WORD FOR WORD AFTER 24 YEARS.
