Movie Reviews of Phantom of the Opera (Universal Studios Classic Monster Collection)

Movie Review: A 'must see' Film
Summary: 5 Stars

From Australia,
300 years ago when I was a very young boy, I missed school for 3 weeks
to see this film which was screening at the wonderful State Theatre in the City of Melbourne. Sneaking through the theatre's back door I spent my entire days imersing myself in the wonderful music and song by both Susanna Foster and Nelson Eddy, and the fine acting of Claude Rains. There
have been numerious versions of 'Phantom of the Opera' but this is the best by a long streak. The print is excellent, with no artifacts or 'cue
marks'. Certainly not to be missed.

Movie Review: Nelson Eddy revives his opera career
Summary: 5 Stars

What a quaint idea to cast an actual opera singer, Nelson Eddy, as the baritone. His whole film career at MGM never allowed him to display his talent so beautifully. Claude Raines was very effective as the Phantom, and Susanna Foster, in her first film role was a beautiful and talented Christine. The opera scenes were well staged, and for a 1943 film at Universal, it was quite lavish. The underground lair of the Phantom was chilling--I do believe I read that part of the set was where the Lon Chaney version was filmed. A bit of trivia--this is the only film in which Mr. Eddy did not win the leading lady at the end. Hopefully this convinced him to never dye his blond hair black again and grow a mustache:)

Movie Review: Best of the Phantom Musicals
Summary: 5 Stars

The very fact that Nelson Eddy and Susanna Foster were chosen to make this film should tell all that the films primary focus is not on the phantom although Raines plays the part well. The music is great, the singing fantastic. With Foster how could it be otherwise. The sets are also wonderful and lend themselves to your immersion into the film. You really can sit back and listen to the film without watching it and still enjoy it.Should you enjoy Foster as much as I ,view her in The Climax with Karloff. Fair movie but again great sets and fabulous singing.Turhan Bay's role as a lovesick puppy ruins the film.

Movie Review: NO LONGER A PHANTOM!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I SAW THIS MOVIE AS A CHILD ON TV MANY YEARS AGO WHEN TELEVISION PROGRAMMING INCLUDED CLASSIC MOVIES ON A DAILY BASIS. IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. ALTHOUGH THE FILM DOES NOT INCLUDE A TRUE ACCOUNT OF THE CHARACTER CHRISTINE, AND HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT OF THE ACTOR, CLAUDE RAINS, AS IT IS PORTRAYED IN THE BOOK; I AM STILL GLAD THAT I FINALLY HAVE COPY OF THIS MOVIE. I AM A LOVER OF "LONG HAIRED" MUSIC, AND I WATCH THIS MOVIE OVER AND OVER AGAIN, JUST TO SEE THE OPERA SEQUENCES. THE SPECIAL FEATURES ARE A DEFINITE ADDED TREAT. THANKS!!

Movie Review: The myth; the legend!
Summary: 5 Stars

Classic portrait of a violinist, whose face has been totally disfigured and who scares to spectators and workers of Paris Opera. One of the most eminent movies of the forties, with a spectacular photography of a team directed by Alexander Golitzen, 14 times nominated and triple winner of the Academy Award.

It's useless to remark the memorable performance of Claude Rains (Mr. Smith goes to Washington, Notorious, Casablanca), one of the most extraordinary French actors ever born.
