Movie Review: Tasty trash to cheer you up

Outside of genre collector types, two kinds of viewers will likely enjoy this DVD - those who genuinely love B-movies of the so-bad-they're-good ilk, and those who like to do their own version of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I happen to be both, so I was thrilled beyond words to find this double-feature. "Cheap beyond belief" is how one reviewer here accurately put it. But hey, there's plenty of horror flicks out there with big budgets that I can't even sit through. These movies are essential, especially if you fit into the above categories. I was ecstatic to find that "Beast with a Million Eyes" was just as jaw-droppingly tasty a trash film as I remembered it from when I was a kid. "Phantom" isn't quite as good, but fans of really cheesy monsters (creatures similar in believability to the one in "The Day the World Ended") will love it, and it's easier to smart off to than "Beast." There's not much I can add to the reviews already here, but "Beast" is right up there with "The Flesh Eaters" in the genre of deliriously awful cinema. Lots of terrible films are so bad they're just... well, bad, a chore to sit through. But as previously noted, there's a sincerity to these flicks, especially "Beast," that somehow draws you in and makes you want to take them home, the way some people are suckers for mangy, scraggly cats or dogs. I pop this video in when I want to feel better. It always, always works.
