Movie Reviews of Phantasm

Movie Review: A Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Becoming a "classic" horror movie is very difficult. Mainly because each generation becomes more desensitized to violence, and more used to horror conventions. As such, they come to expect the gore and monster jumping out of nowhere tactics. This is why Phantasm's ability to achieve classic status, especially given its modest budget and production value is such a feat. Unlike most, I did not see this movie until very recently, meaning I've seen a very large amount of horror flicks prior to this so did not expect to find anything new in an old low budget horror flick. How wrong I was.

Phantasm is a creepy, scary, psychological movie. The movie is more interested in playing with your mind than with a body count, which is the way I prefer it. There's an air of mystery throughout the movie, some of which is not resolved. I liked that a horror movie, especially one from a few decades ago, found ways to surprise me and keep me on the edge of my seat. Sure the effects and makeup is a bit dated, but that doesn't stop this from being a classic movie. If you haven't seen this, I highly recommend giving it a chance.

Movie Review: They Saved the Best for First!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been watching this movie for 12 years now, and it doesn't cease to entertain me. I admit that I am not, and never was, really scared by the film, but it's highly entertaining nonetheless.

The Tall Man, his Silver Balls, the Dwarves...it doesn't get any better than this, people! I especially love how in this movie, and ONLY in this movie, The Tall Man has the power to change into a woman and back. Why in the world does he actually go ahead and mess around with the guys in the graveyard? Shouldn't he just kill them on the spot? And why is Mike, a 13 year old, always driving the car (and fixing it!), while his 25 year old brother Jody rides a bike? And why do The Tall Man's fingers squirt mustard? Is that some freaky dimension-X replacement for blood?

These, and other equally important questions remain unanswered, which is why Phantasm is the amazing movie and phenomenon that it is.

Angus is creepy - "The funeral is about to begin.......SIR!!!!"

Great philms, highly recommended!

Movie Review: phantastic philm!

OK so now that I've annoyed you with really bad phonetic jokes....for the brave few willing to get past that obvious mark of bad taste....phantasm is a truly unique addition to any horror fans library. i remember first seeing the film many years ago and the starkness and eerie quite of the mausoleum is something that has always stayed with me. the flying orbs are a great vehicle for terror. If you are new to Don Coscarelli's movies I hope this will encourage you to check out the sequels to Phantasm and of course the mighty Bubba-Hotep! (Long live the king!) The movie has a great balance of drama and good old 70's cheese (not over the top in my opinion....just enough to make you sit back and smile). After all when was the last time an aging ice cream vendor with pattern baldness was a hero!!? All kidding aside though, as a pretty avid horror movie junkie, and a fan that looks for really good horror films that continue to stand the test of time....this is one of them!

Movie Review: USA Region 1 DVD Looses to Region 2 Yet Again!!
Summary: 5 Stars

First off, this is a great movie! An oldie, but a good one, As are the other three Phantasm movies!

Yet why is it that Anchorbay has made the complete Phantasm movie set (along with a bonus DVD and ALL the movies are in a very cool silver ball with daggers sticking out) available to Region 2 (Europe) people, and not for Region 1 (America)? First released back in 2005 and still not out for R1!!!

Yes, if you have a DVD player that plays all regions (see review on the Phillips DVD player if you're interested), you can purchase that set through Amaazon UK (then convert the English Pound to the American dollar for your total which as of today is approx. 2:1...$5 USA dollars is equal to ten British pounds). However I don't know why it's not available for Region 1 people??

You can see the silver ball Phantasm DVD set at the Amazon UK web page.

Movie Review: IF THIS ONE DOESN'T SCARE YOU, THEN YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD!
Summary: 5 Stars

This film combines horror with sci-fi. Believe me, this one will keep you on the edge of your seat for the complete movie.

Two brothers discover the local mortuary isn't what it seems. The Mortician has a legion of hooded killers (souls of the damned) working for him. Let's face it. We're all scared of cemeteries at night and can you imagine roaming around in a mortuary at night with the lights out? I can't!

Although I know nobody that has ever seen "Phantasm", it is a truly scary movie and a horror classic. I consider it one of the scariest I've ever seen.

This version has scenes never seen in America before. It was written and directed by Don Coscarelli who went on to "The Beastmaster" and "Bubba Ho-Tep" fame. There are three sequels.

Don't watch this one alone.
