Movie Reviews of PhantasmMovie Review: Phantastic. Summary: 5 Stars
Phantasm is one of the most bizarre horror films out there but its also one of the best and is a classic 70's horror film, everything about it from the mood to the atmosphere to the music and stroryline was great. The film is also known for having the flying silver ball with a brain drilling spike and of course Angus Scrimm as the sinister Tallman who is a great villain hes like the boogeyman or something and some dwarfs it might sound cheesy but its not, it actually works and thats why it was successful for a while but it wasn't as popular as the other horror series like Nightmare on elm street or Friday the 13th.
The story combines both horror and sci-fi elements and it was directed and written by Don Coscorelli who is very a talented and underrated director in my opinion, it was basically done with a low budget but it has a lot of edge and it was stylishly made with a nice and creepy atmosphere not to mention the great music it was very spooky (the Swedish death metal group Entombed used a sample from the theme for their song Left hand path). After witnessing the death of a family friend young Mike Pearson (Micheal Baldwin) stumbles onto a horrible incident while visiting the gravesite on a dark night, Mike watches from a distance a tall man lift a coffin as if it was light as a feather and puts it inside a hearse, following the hearse Mike learns of the sinister undertaker known as Tall man and then quickly tells his older brother Jody what he saw at first Jody does not believe him but then Mike brings him some proof which is a severed finger thats still moving.
Together with their friend Reggie (Reggie Banister) an ice cream vendor with a ponytail they try to stop the plans of the "Tall Man" and his evil minions, it seems like the "Tall man" has been taking the exhumed bodies from the recently deceased and has turned them into bizarre and evil little munchkins or whatever and makes them work in another parallel world. There are also some silver balls that are controlled by the Tall man that manage to drill into peoples brains this all takes place at the morningside cemetery. The cast is pretty good especially Angus Scrimm as the tall man (is he a nightmare or is he real) and Reggie Banister who both appear in all of the sequels they obviously stand out the most and the acting was terrific, the film can be a bit weird and surreal but is quite original for its time with a unique idea it also has some decent gore and brief nudity and the special fx were great especially for a low budget horror film, at times some scenes do not make any sense like the old lady or fortune teller but this is definitely a cult classic and its perfect for halloween, I highly recommend this and two thumbs up!.
