Movie Reviews of Peyton Place

Movie Review: Peyton Place - The Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

It's a great movie. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it is a widescreen version and my television is not widescreen.

Movie Review: Colorful soap classic/less than perfect DVD
Summary: 3 Stars

Lana Turner and a terrific cast make this toned down version of Grace Metalious's steamy, sensational novel a real potboiling delight! The music, the cinematography, everything...it all evokes a long ago time and place and here it is all beautifully preserved for posterity! Fans will also enjoy its sequel, RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE with luscious Carol Lynley and another good looking cast of youngsters and scenery-chewing veterans.

Unfortunately, this DVD has a few jumps and glitches which disrupt perfect viewing. The AMC Backstory documentary isn't all that informative, and you'd think they'd at least have edited out the commercial bumpers. The commentary track by Tamblyn and Moore is one of the most boring ever...nearly impossible to sit through. Neither actor offers much insight into the film they are watching, instead rattling off alot of their own movie credits and misinformation (ie. Dick Sargent was never in "that genie show," Ms. Moore). Who was producing this!?

Movie Review: A big screen soap that does little to improve on the small screen variety
Summary: 3 Stars

The youngsters of a small town called Peyton Place chafe under the stifling conservatism and parochialism of their parents' generation.

The performances are stiff (with the exception of the always dependable Arthur Kennedy) and the narrative plods along from one contrived shock to the next, but I must admit it held my interest much of the time. In this film, you are never far away from a murder, an abortion, or a tragic misunderstanding. Franz Waxman composed an evocative score that often manages to communicate the longing and hopefulness of frustrated youth with little help from John Michael Hayes's screenplay. It amazes me that this film was nominated for nine Oscars, but my faith in the Academy is marginally restored by the fact that it lost in every category (although Kennedy may well have deserved a supporting actor award).

Movie Review: Pure Soap Opera
Summary: 3 Stars

It's plum wonderful how this once daring drama remains a classic -- classic trash! The angst of small town dwellers during WWII is depicted glamorousely and juicily. If you strip away the Hollywood excesses there are some pretty tawdry happenings in this picturesque village.

Lana Turner is howlingly bad as single mother to a goody-goody daughter. Russ Tamblyn changes from sensitive mama's boy to player so well that one is disappointed to see the direction his character went. Hope Lange looks lovely and manages to elicit the appropriate sympathy.

The film is not so over-the-top as to be camp yet, but it takes a strong step in the right direction. The trash value is one better than the 1950's "Imitation of Life" but not as delectable as "Valley of the Dolls".

Movie Review: Overrated Film
Summary: 3 Stars

Having heard all of my adult life about "Peyton Place," I finally got around to checking out the DVD from the library and was majestically underwhelmed. This film is so loaded with fifties teenage angst and campy, bad acting that it was a trial for me to sit through. The best actor/actress in the whole production was Arthur Kennedy, who played his role as the drunken stepfather/rapist to the hilt. Although the story is supposed to take place during the early forties, nothing about the film seems to fit in that time frame except the automobiles. The entire production seemed contrived and was overblown, overracted, and boring.

The beautiful scenes of Maine were the only redeeming feature.
