Movie Reviews of Peyton Place

Movie Review: Get this DVD-Peyton Place the classic soap opera
Summary: 5 Stars

Peyton Place is one of my favorite books and one of my favorite movies. The filming and score are beautiful. The scenery of coastal Maine is fantastic. This is one of the most popular soap operas...the term "Peyton Place" has come to mean a gossipy community.

Most of the acting is great... the only actor that does not seem right for the role is Lee Philips. He is does not see the type of guy Lana Turner would go for.

Lana Turner and Diane Varsi have some great mother daughter conflicts. Lloyd Nolan is great as the doctor caught in the moral dilemma of covering up a miscarriage (which was an abortion in the book)

The DVD adds an interesting commentary by Russ Tamblyn and Terry Moore. You feel as if you are sitting with them as the watch the film. They give share stories of what it was like to be a young actor in the 1950s.

This is a great film and even better DVD. My wife and I liked the book and movie so much we named our daughter Allison after Peyton Place's main character.

Movie Review: Great Film, Actor Commentary So-So
Summary: 5 Stars

While I've read the book and think it is much better than the film, I still love this film a lot for the great acting, music, and filmography. The DVD reproduction is much clearer than the VHS version.

I was a little disappointed in the commentary with Russ Tamblyn and Terry Moore. Both rambled on about personal items not relevant to the movie and a lot of silent gaps. While part of the commentary was enjoyable, I think maybe since so many years have passed they might have forgotten more than they remembered.

I always like the extras with the DVD versions, but this one was lacking in extras. Overall it is worth having this movie on DVD because it is a classic. The picture and audio quality is superb and worth the price. It's too bad Lana Turner died before the production of this DVD. Her commentary would have been priceless.

Unfortunately they don't make great movies like this anymore!

Movie Review: Oh what a beautiful movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this DVD when it origionally came out and I loved it so much. I never heard about this film before I saw the DVD because my parents considered this a Taboo piece of Cinema History. But when I bought the DVD and watched I loved it and I cried through the whole movie. You weep with Selena Cross, with the incidents with her father, and you cry with Allison with her problems with her mother that we all go through at that age. And you just weep through the whole movie. Lana Turner was dynamite as Constance, and Diane Varsi was so good as her mother. I don't understand why so many people say this is a bad movie. It is the best movie I have seen in years. Hopefully they will release the 2 sequels on DVD. Return To Peyton Place, and Murder In Peyton Place.

Movie Review: A classic soap!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Peyton Place" is one of the best movie soap operas ever made.
It's 1950s filmmaking in top form.Jerry Wald's Technicolor and
CinemaScope production is terrific, and Mark Robson's strong
direction is perfect. The entire cast is brilliant, but two of
them really stand out.Lana Turner gives her best performance,
while Hope Lange steals the movie as a haunting and wonderfully
touching Selena. On top of all this,Franz Waxman contributes one
of the loveliest and most memorable scores in movie history(that
main theme is a gem!).This is how to film a novel!

Movie Review: Peyton Place is the Ultimate Soap Opera!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is great! The acting by Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Lloyd Nolan, and Arthur Kennedy is fantastic, the direction is imaginative (the scene with Lee Philips driving to Peyton Place, the rape scene, and the courtroom scenes are all especially riveting), the sweeping music score by Franz Waxman is appropriately haunting, and the beautiful New England photography all combine to make a remarkably entertaining film. Even people who may not usually care for this genre (I'm talking about men!) will likely enjoy this movie, as it keeps the viewers interest even with it's long running time.
