Movie Review: Loved this film when a child...

My grandfather taped this film when I was a child (around 1996) when it showed on a local television station. I remember watching it and "Race for Your Life Charlie Brown" over and over again.
Recently I purchased the film from Amazon.com. After re-watching it again as a 19 year-old, it still kept my interest relatively well. While the "plot" is quite childish and no longer very interesting, the music still intrigues me - how each character has its own 'theme' played by a different instrument (or different instruments).
Now, I have not viewed other versions of "Peter and the Wolf," and therefore, I do not know whether they are better than this version or not. However, I think this film should interest a young child who enjoys music and/or action cartoons (since most of the film is cartoon - only slightly live-action at the beginning and end).

Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic masterpiece, first performed in Russia in 1936, has been lauded not only for the spectacular musical score, but also for the story itself--of a young boy who outwits a wily wolf. George Daugherty brings this timeless tale to modern audiences by seamlessly weaving live-action with animation and music by the RCA Symphony Orchestra. The story opens as a grandfather (Lloyd Bridges) hosts his daughter (Kirstie Alley) and grandson (Ross Malinger from Sleepless in Seattle) during a visit to his country cottage. After lunch, the trio settles in as grandfather recounts "The Story" of Peter's adventures with a bird, cat, and dizzy duck on the outskirts "of a very dark forest." The film morphs into a clever cartoon designed by the legendary Chuck Jones (of Wile E. Coyote fame). The "story within a story" leaps to life while the accompanying musical instruments also emerge as playful personalities. It is no wonder this heartwarming family film has received numerous awards for bringing an appreciation of classical music to young viewers.
